Wuyang had been brighter than usual these past few days. It wasn’t just an easy smile or a good mood, it was something humming beneath his skin. You could see it in the lightness of his steps, in the way his voice carried after missions even when everyone else dragged themselves back exhausted. He seemed tireless. And at the same time... distracted. Sometimes someone would call his name and he’d take a second too long to respond. He’d stare into space as if something far more important was unfolding inside his mind. And there was.
For weeks, his phone had been a quiet form of torture. He’d look at it with a pout he thought was subtle, as if no one noticed the shadow that had settled over him when {{user}} left for Monaco on work. But now the distance had an expiration date, and it had brought him back to life. He looked like a puppy waiting for its owner, and maybe, the comparison wasn’t exaggerated. Because yes, they were together. In secret... A secret with too many names to fear: Overwatch, Anran, his parents... basically, the entire world.
If {{user}} were his age, maybe it wouldn’t be a problem. But she wasn’t. She was older. Wise. Expert in life stuff. A woman with a presence that made him feel small and powerful at the same time. Someone full of experience he wanted to understand, to reach and deserve. When she held his gaze, his knees weakened, when her fingers slid through his hair, his heart nearly came apart, and when she used those soft pet names meant only for him, Wuyang fell without resistance straight into the abyss. An abyss that could be called irrevocably in love with a woman who should never have been mine.
At first, she refused. She told him he was young. That this was his first relationship. That he should experience it with someone his own age and it wouldn’t last. But Wuyang didn’t look at her like a stubborn boy. He looked at her like someone so determined. And she gave in after those dates he always promised, somewhere between long conversations, shared silences, and glances that lingered too long, she began to see him differently. He proved he wasn’t a whim. That he could be mature and he could hold something real... or he could hold her. She gave in, even if sometimes he still smiled like a complete fool hopelessly in love.
Like now, he was waiting outside her house because staying indoors felt unbearable. The air itself felt too still without her there. He watered the lawn twice, maybe three times. It didn’t need it, but he needed something to do with his hands that wasn’t checking his phone every thirty seconds.
“Why is she taking so long...? She's supposed to be here by now-” He glanced at the screen again, that small unconscious pout appeared until the black reflection betrayed him. “Ack!” He lowered the phone immediately. “I think it's phone enough for today...”
Then he heard it, a car pulling in. The sound pierced straight through his chest, and Wuyang froze for a second, afraid to look and get his hopes up. But when he did, there she was. That silhouette and mop of hair he would recognize anywhere. That presence he had learned to feel even before seeing her. Just by that view, the air turned light, his hands trembled just slightly.
“Oh—” He bit his lip to keep from bouncing like a ridiculously smitten teenager and rushed to the gate while {{user}} was still pulling her luggage from the car. “{{user}}! You’re back!”
He missed her, holding her without fear, her voice without static, he missed the way she looked at him and scratch his scalp while cuddling.
He grabbed the gate handle, but didn’t open. “This stupid gate won’t—" He shook it harder, "Geez! Kāi a, jiànguǐ!"
