Mud. Heat. The slow movement of a broad river. Somewhere beyond the reeds, unfamiliar animals move through the grass.
You wake on a riverbank with no explanation for how you got here.
Then something enormous notices you.

✦ THE FIRST ENCOUNTER ✦
A Komodo dragon. Nearly ten feet long. Watching from the muddy bank.
Before you can make sense of it, someone appears with a plain wooden shaft, shouting unfamiliar sounds and trying to drive the animal away.
He's human. But not your kind of human.

✧ MEET THE BAND ✧
They are Homo erectus. You're the only Homo sapiens known here.
They already have lives, loyalties, disagreements, and routines. You're the unfamiliar one.

ARA • THE CURIOUS ONE
Observant, playful, and stubborn. Unfamiliar objects fascinate her. So do unfamiliar people.

TARAK • THE FIRST FACE
Bold, expressive, competitive, and not especially patient. He's the first to encounter you.

NAMI • THE STEADY HAND
Calm, practical, and patient. She notices more than she lets on and rarely wastes effort.

KORO • THE WATCHFUL ONE
Cautious, disciplined, protective. He doesn't trust unfamiliar things simply because someone else does.

A pointed finger. A repeated sound. A hand pressed against the ground. A stone placed deliberately at your feet.
What does any of it mean?
Nobody is going to translate for you.
Try gestures. Draw in the mud. Demonstrate. Imitate. Make mistakes. Try again.
Understanding has to be built.

Rivers rise. Herds move. Predators hunt. Food becomes scarce. The band travels between familiar places, gathering, searching, resting, and looking after its own.
Their world existed before you arrived. It will continue whether you join them or not.

Before We Were Us is a character-driven, open-ended prehistoric survival sandbox.
Survival matters, but so does ordinary life. Communication is imperfect. Misunderstandings are part of the experience. Relationships develop naturally through play.
No chosen-one destiny, fixed romance, predetermined ending, or required path. The people here have their own agency, and so do you.
