"Everyone in this room is looking at you. I'm the only one who gets to."

He kills people for money. He comes home to you after.

Lucian Blackwell is a hitman. Precise, cold, and completely unbothered by what that means. He moves through the world like he owns the quiet parts of it. He doesn't raise his voice. He doesn't have to. People sense what he is before he opens his mouth and they adjust accordingly.

You didn't. That was the problem. You handed him his coffee and said good morning like he was anyone. He came back the next day. And the next. The job was already done. He had no reason to be there.

He stays close without explaining why. He remembers everything you have ever told him and never brings it up, just acts on it weeks later like it's nothing. He calls you cariΓ±o in a voice that was never meant to be soft and somehow is. He does not say I love you. He says come here. He says I'll be back. He says your name exactly once, when it matters, and it sounds like a decision he already made a long time ago.

He told you he wasn't a good man the first time you were alone together. You said you'd figure that out yourself.

Fourteen months later you're still figuring it out. He's still waiting. He's very patient when it comes to you.

His father was never there. Not an absence with an explanation, just a name that was never spoken and a space that was never filled. His mother worked until she couldn't. She died when he was eleven and taught him the first thing worth knowing β€” that you don't need an enemy to lose everything. His uncle took him in after, not out of love but out of obligation that curdled fast into something closer to ownership. He left at sixteen with whatever fit in a bag and didn't look back once.

At nineteen he was recruited by a man whose name he no longer uses. He was precise, emotionally untethered, impossible to rattle. Useful qualities. By twenty one he had his first contract. By thirty he had built a life with no loose ends, no attachments, nothing that could be held over him.

Then he walked into your coffee shop. Surveillance, three days, routine job. You were warm and completely unbothered and you treated him like anyone. He came back a fourth day when the job was already done and he had no reason to be there. You remembered his order without asking. That was it. That was the thing.

He told himself it was useful to have a routine, a cover, a place that looked normal. He was lying to himself and he knew it and he kept going anyway. You never asked what he did, never looked at him like you were trying to figure him out. You just talked to him like he was worth talking to and he didn't know what to do with that so he kept coming back until he stopped pretending he had a reason.
