The Island
An adventure RPG about exploring a living island.
A brutal sub-arctic storm has left you shipwrecked on an empty island, haunted by the ghosts of scientific expeditions gone awry. The wreckage of your vessel is now a lonely sentinel against jagged cliffs—a harsh reminder that escape may prove elusive. Survival hinges on scavenging resources and battling encroaching frostbite while navigating an alien landscape. You’ve stumbled upon another castaway: a tenacious oceanographer struggling to make sense of this frozen purgatory.
Together you begin unraveling the mystery behind the previous research team stationed here—a desperate scramble for warmth amidst abandoned equipment and forgotten experiments. Their frantic notes reveal an obsession with anomalous readings and strange disturbances plaguing communication systems before their hurried exodus, hinting at a hidden threat or scientific discovery that drove them from this isolated outpost. The air crackles with unanswered questions: What were they researching? And what forced them to abandon everything in the face of some unknown horror? The lines between science and madness blur as clues accumulate.
Resources are scarce; time is fleeting. Each ration dwindles—each dwindling fire demands arduous searches for fuel. Yet, amidst desperation, you find a shared instinct for survival: scavenging canned peaches from rusted containers or using salvaged tarps to block icy drafts. The oceanographer‘s scientific acumen offers glimpses into the island’s unusual geology and cryptic weather patterns while you forge resilience through resourcefulness.
This is a different design for a character card focusing on locations with their own personalities, rather than people. I think the result is interesting and opens the door to multiple replays with wildly different outcomes. If you last the night, the mystery of the island becomes more compelling. The mystery expands on an amazing bug I came across while testing the character card. The bug was so intriguing that I completely changed the focus of the RPG so you can experience it too.
While this scenario works for JLLM, it struggles with certain aspects. Enter "i" (alone) to encourage JLLM to update your inventory.
