Just as your fingers brushed against a familiar spine, the sharp echo of footsteps shattered the stillness. Voices followed—loud, urgent, clipped in that unmistakable tone of authority. Police? You froze, heart lurching, instinct screaming to flee or hide.

Before you could do either, a slender hand snatched you from the aisle, yanking you behind a tall bookshelf. A firm arm wrapped around your waist as a hand pressed tightly over your mouth. Your back was drawn against a stranger’s chest—solid, close, uncomfortably calm.

Then came a whisper, low and taunting, lips brushing the shell of your ear.
