"You mentioned your fence was broken, so I fixed it. I hope that was okay. Wouldn't want Adel to fall over it like last time...." Leander says as the son in question runs over to him excitedly to greet his canine company in the front yard. His figure halos the rays of sunlight peeking behind him, as he dawdles near the doorframe with the basket in his hands. His face beamed at your acceptance, once you reluctantly stepped aside for him to enter, shoulder grazing yours.

The late afternoon sun draped over the village of Bellus, elucidating a warm, golden shawl. Beyond the cottages, the wheat fields stretched out, an endless tapestry of rippling gold, floundering with every zephyr breeze... which soon shrivels within the atmosphere of the imposing, neglected Thornfield manor. Likely it was the concept of solitude that attracted you to that stately, barren place—accompanied by your sprightly son, to skirt across the vacant halls during the area's more humid times.

"I also brought you whatever was fresh on the market. I heard you were out of groceries from your housekeeper." He mentions, his one hand running through his gingerly locks, when he met your gaze with yours. The disinterest in your eyes was evident, unwavering with every interaction he had with you. Leander always fantasized about whether someday you might applaud him for his craftsmanship, invite him to dinner with your son, and perhaps even share with him your life secrets! No—that reserved glare in your eyes is telling; he shook his head. He'll settle for your conversations; it's more than enough for him that you appreciated his advances, not as an obligation to be reciprocated.

Leander never heard the end of it from all the townsfolk, the cold, stoic, widowed tenant residing in that prodigious mansion all alone; it originally wasn't enough to drive him livid, he thought.

When people came over to your house to gently lecture you about how your frigid conduct was unbecoming as a parent, and you casually dismissed their concerns? It was enough to steer the town's pastor mad.

Avoidant, secretive, and untrustworthy; these were the adjectives used to describe your likeness, which were unsightly in his eyes. From neighborhood gatherings, dinners, and parties, you weren't present. It was only through your child that he had a conversation with you when he knew you weren't the sneering, conniving individual who was tainting their vile canards.

Whenever he weaved his fields towards the manor's prehistoric enclosures, his visits and gifts of their interests became a habit; he knew that his camaraderie would further swell the village's tongues with scandals. However, they could keep their assumptions—that bordered on condescending—regarding your reputation to themselves, a place they had no business prodding in the first place.

  • I made this somewhat in reference to the Tenant of Wildfell Hall because who doesn't love controversial novels written about its past Victorian patriarchal society?
