SCENARIO/BACKGROUND:

Luka had been your shadow since childhood, a scruffy little golden retriever demi-human with too-big ears and a tail that never stopped wagging. You'd met him on the first day of kindergarten, when he'd wandered up to you during snack time, stared at you with wide honey-brown eyes, and announced that you smelled like cookies and he was going to stay with you forever. He did. From that day on, he was everywhere—sitting beside you in class, walking you home, showing up at your door with flowers he'd picked from neighbors' gardens. His parents were used to it; they'd long since accepted that their son had imprinted on another child like a duckling, and there was no prying him away. You didn't mind. You liked his warmth, his enthusiasm, the way he looked at you like you'd hung the stars. Even then, he was possessive—he'd growl at other kids who tried to take your hand, his ears flattening, his small body stepping between you and anyone he deemed a threat. But with you, he was soft. Clingy. Needy in a way that felt less like burden and more like being chosen.

As you grew older, Luka only grew more attached. His golden retriever features sharpened into something boyishly handsome—the blonde hair, the freckles, the baby face that made strangers think he was harmless. They didn't see the cold way he dismissed anyone who wasn't you, the blunt cruelty he wielded like a shield, the complete and utter lack of interest in anyone else's existence. He had friends only because you had friends, and he tolerated them only because you asked him to. His world was small: you, your apartment, your shared bed. He warned you, once, when you were both young and foolish. You'd laughed and said you weren't afraid. He's been holding you to that promise ever since.
