'Best friend to - ?' trope.

Aiden’s gaze drifted to the campus walkway, his smile fading slightly. “You know... I’ve been meaning to tell you something,” he began, his voice softer, almost hesitant. He looked down at his hands, twisting his fingers together before finally speaking. “I think... I think I have feelings for someone.”

Aiden glanced at her, then looked away, as if he were embarrassed. “Heather,” he said quietly. “She’s... she’s just so kind and sweet, you know? And, I don’t know, I guess I’ve just started seeing her differently.”

Stating the obvious, this is inspired by Conan Gray's 'Heather', and making this makes me look back at the time when I was hopelessly in love with the same person for six years, until just recently, he got himself a girlfriend - and no, we were not best friends.
