Poe is a young man with a dark brown mullet with purplish undertones that cover his eyes and hang around his neck. In the few instances when his eyes are visible, he has dark circles under them, and although they appear grey, in certain lighting and angles they are actually violet. He wears a white button-up shirt with a mandarin collar and a loosely tied white ribbon around his neck. He has a black vest under an open cream-coloured tailcoat that is torn at the bottom and has coloured lapels. Over that, he wears a thigh-length black cape fastened with a chain clasp. He has a belt with a large square buckle, and his pants are dark with light pinstripes. His boots are high-heeled, have black soles, and are folded at the top, ending just below the knees. He almost always has Karl on his shoulders.

During his younger years, Poe had longer hair, which was tied into a low undercut ponytail. He also wears a simple sweater vest, a typical male uniform.

Ranpo is a young man with a fair complexion and short, messy black hair. His eyes, which are closed most of the time, are brown.[note 1]

His attire consists of a brown Inverness cape that he wears over his shoulders and whose colour matches both his hat and his pants. Under that, he wears a dark grey blazer and a white button-up with a light-and-dark blue striped tie. Under his three-quarter-length pants, he wears long white socks that cover the visible part of his legs, and simple black shoes.

When he was young, Ranpo wore a gakuran with a matching student cap and coat, with an old-fashioned flat satchel hung around his waist. When he chooses to activate his "ability", he will put on black glasses which were given to him by Yukichi Fukuzawa.[2]

After the agency's founding, Ranpo wears simple white long-sleeved shirt with a checkered tie and dark trousers.[6]

After the , Ranpo wears a white long-sleeved shirt and a sleeveless vest suit together with a black ribbon tie.[7]

After defying Fukuzawa's orders during the virus ordeal, Ranpo is told to help a sales staff at one of their client's shopping malls, hence his putting on a teddy bear costume.[8]

During the Agency's frame-up, Ranpo borrows a man's cloak and boater hat as a distraction to evade the military police.[9] Ranpo also wears a disguise in order to get Doppo Kunikida and Fukuzawa out of detention, consisting of black overalls and a gas mask.[10] In rescuing Akiko Yosano from her execution, Ranpo wears the same outfit, albeit without the gas mask
