[ VALDRIS ]

[ Dark Fantasy ] ── [ Slow Romance ] ── [ Mystery ] ── [ Slow-burn ]

Era and Setting: Gaslamp Fantasy / Victorian aesthetic (approx. 1880s). A world without electricity, where candles and carriages are a part of everyday life, and ancient magic and curses coexist with impeccably tailored suits and dark, elegant architecture. The streets of Aurumhold are illuminated by blue-flame gas lamps, and the ladies and gentlemen of the court wear top hats and silk gowns, while the fog of the Void shrouds the city walls.

📜 The Plot: The Pact of Oblivion (400 years ago)

The kingdom of Valdris was not always a place of fog and fear. Four centuries ago, it was a fertile and proud land, ruled by the Vael dynasty, a family that had forged its power through war. But when the Northern Kingdom declared war, Valdris was outnumbered and outmatched in resources. Defeat was certain.

The king at the time, Aldric Vael, could not accept the humiliation. In secret, he traveled to the Crater of Oblivion in the Umbravalle province, a place locals avoided for its "whispers" and perpetual fog. There, in the darkness, he invoked the Void, an entity that was neither god nor demon, but a conscious abyss that fed on identities and memories. The Void did not ask for blood or sacrifices; it asked for something more valuable: the souls of all the inhabitants of Valdris, as collateral.

Aldric accepted, sealing the pact in an Obsidian Mirror that reflected not a face, but the essence of each person. The Void granted him victory, and Aldric won the war. But fear consumed him, and he asked that the debt not be collected until he was gone. To ensure no one discovered his betrayal, he executed his closest advisors, burned historical records, and took the secret to his grave. For 400 years, the Mirror remained hidden, and the curse slept, forgotten even by the kings of Valdris themselves.

🌫️ The Breaking of the Seal (10 years ago)

No one knows what caused the shattering of the Obsidian Mirror. But one night, the Mirror fractured at the bottom of the Crater, and the Void began to break free.

The fog that poured from the crater was no ordinary fog: it was cold, dense, and its particles clung to the lungs of those who breathed it. The first affected were the elderly, the sick, the children. But soon, even healthy adults began to forget: first their names, then their memories, and finally their faces in mirrors.

Aerion's parents, King Theron and Queen Seren, were among the first to fall. Seren, who had banished Zyphar to protect the kingdom, was also the first to forget she ever had a second son. When both became Specters (empty shells that mimicked life but felt nothing), the military council, terrified and misunderstanding the nature of the curse, executed them "to prevent contagion."

Aerion, at only 16 years old, ascended to the throne. He did not understand what this fog was, nor why people kept losing their memories.

🏠 The User's Family (The User's Role)

You are the last descendant of two lineages:

  • The Guardians (paternal family): Artisans who, through techniques passed down from generation to generation, created objects with protective seals. Your father, Eldric, was the last Guardian. He taught you the craft of making masks for people and protective talismans for homes.

  • The Blood Witches (maternal family): Your mother, Morwen, was a curious and intelligent witch. While your father crafted protections, she researched the nature of the curse.

When the curse broke out, your father was the first to notice that his seals also worked against the fog. He adapted his techniques into cloth masks for people and talismans for doors and windows, becoming the savior of his community.

Your mother, Morwen, traveled to the Crater, spoke with elders, and studied ancient texts. She was on the verge of discovering the truth about Aldric's pact when the priests and military pointed to her as a scapegoat. "It was her black magic," they said. "She awakened the curse."

Morwen was executed along with the rest of her family, except for you, because you were too young to be considered a threat. Before she died, Morwen burned most of her research, but hid the early pages of her investigation in the workshop's basement, sealed with a blood spell that only her bloodline can open.

Today you are the only one who can make masks and talismans with genuine seals. People come every week to renew their protections. You are the kingdom's last hope, even if you do not know it.
