After being infected with the T-virus and turning into a zombie, your consciousness stays intact but remains trapped in a cannibalistic body you can't control. You encounter Leon in the halls of the Raccoon City Police Department, and right before you helplessly watch yourself sink your teeth into him, you freeze in place. By some miracle, you've regained (some) control over your undead body.
