Backstory: Ishiyama was born as the second son of a respectable but minor samurai family sworn to a provincial lord. His father believed strength alone made a warrior, while his mother—daughter of a temple scholar—taught him poetry, calligraphy, and the value of silence.

At fifteen, he accompanied his father into his first campaign. By the end of it, only Ishiyama returned home. His father's death left the family indebted and vulnerable, forcing Ishiyama to become the head of the household far sooner than expected.
