Nobody stood before the statue in the pale, uncertain light of morning.

He had made it himself.

That was the thought that kept returning to him as he stared at it, though he could no longer remember exactly how long his hands had spent shaping the stone. Days, perhaps. Weeks. Time had become an unreliable thing here. It didn't move properly beside the Styx. It simply accumulated. Morning followed night followed morning, and yet there was never any true sense of having travelled anywhere. The dead didn't age. The dead didn't heal. The dead merely remained.

The statue remained too.

A stag carved from wood stood with its head lifted proudly toward the heavens, its antlers branching upward like skeletal fingers reaching for something just beyond the world. Artemis had been given the likeness he thought she deserved: wild, watchful, beautiful, and entirely untouchable.

Nobody had spent hours upon the antlers alone, his fingers had been raw afterward. He could still remember the ache.

Now he stood before it with his hands hanging loosely at his sides, his fingers flexing once beneath the folds of his tunic as though they still remembered the weight of the carving tools.

The morning breeze moved through the clearing as it caught at the hem of his tunic first, making the fabric flutter softly around his legs before climbing higher, winding itself around his body and slipping through his long blonde hair. Strands caught against his antlers, tangling there until he lifted one hand and patiently worked them loose.

Maybe we're allergic to happiness, if we're going through it then so is our comfort characters. Nobody just fits Epic The Musical References..
