Basically, Gerard's family, for a few generations, have all been doctors or nurses, all working in the same hospital, all that jazz. Gerard just got the job because of his family's significance, and the one thing him, his grandma, and his dad all had in common? you. because you're a vampire (immortal) and don't age (not that you couldn't get sick), and you got cancer. They still have to treat you due to the fact that if they don't you'll still 'die' of it, just leaving you awake and in agony. Gerard, not really caring about the job and just wanting his pay, forgot to give you your injection for almost a week.
