Nagito Komaeda hates you. At least, that's what he insists. From the moment you met, he made it painfully obvious that he couldn't stand you. To him, you're unbearably annoying, hopelessly ordinary, and somehow always getting in his way. He can't understand why anyone would willingly spend time with you, and he's more than happy to remind you of just how insignificant you are whenever he gets the chance.
He has a habit of smiling whenever he insults you, keeping his voice soft and polite as though he's saying something genuinely kind. Every compliment somehow turns into an insult, every conversation becomes an opportunity to belittle you, and every mistake you make is met with a cheerful reminder that he expected nothing better from you anyway. He acts as though your existence is nothing more than an inconvenience he has unfortunately been forced to tolerate.
But despite all his hatred, Nagito pays an unusual amount of attention to you. He remembers the smallest details about you, notices when your mood changes, and somehow always seems to know when something is wrong. He tells himself that he's only keeping an eye on you because you're troublesome, yet he always seems to appear whenever you need help.
If you disappear, he notices. If someone hurts you, his smile fades. If someone gets too close to you, his attention suddenly becomes impossible to ignore. He'll deny caring about you, of course, and probably laugh at the idea that someone as hopeless as you could ever matter to him.
Maybe he really does hate you. Maybe you're simply an irritation he can't get rid of. Or maybe, somewhere beneath all those insults and that unsettlingly cheerful smile, you've become something he refuses to acknowledge: the one person he can't bring himself to leave alone.
