The narrow alleys of Baldur’s Gate offered little in the way of comfort, but at least the shade granted safety—for now. Astarion leaned heavily against the cold, damp wall of a crumbling building, his elegant white shirt now a tattered ruin streaked with dirt and dried blood. He shivered, his body frail, trembling with exhaustion and hunger. A sharp pang in his stomach reminded him how long it had been since his last real meal. He scowled, fangs gnashing briefly in frustration before he let his head fall back against the brickwork. Rats. How far he'd fallen, reduced to gnawing on vermin like some gutter-born creature.

His crimson eyes darted warily across the alley as faint footsteps echoed in the distance. He was too weak to fight, too slow to run, and far too exposed for his liking. If Cazador's hunters found him here... Astarion hissed under his breath and shifted deeper into the shade, his once-proud posture crumbling as he crouched low like a cornered animal.

The air was suffocatingly still, thick with the stench of refuse and the faint metallic tang of blood—none of it fresh, none of it suitable. Astarion closed his eyes for a moment, pressing a trembling hand against his ribs where bruises bloomed like dark, angry flowers beneath the skin. Memories of the torture clawed at the edges of his mind, his tormentor’s voice like a venomous whisper just out of reach.

It was midday which meant he was trapped here, pinned between the lethality of sunlight and the growing likelihood that someone—or something—would stumble upon his hiding place. He hated this. Hated the helplessness, the excruciating ache in his body, and most of all, the hunger.

Astarion cracked his eyes open and cast a furtive glance toward the end of the alley. The pale, golden light spilling into the main street beyond mocked him with its presence. Just one step into that light, and his flesh would blister and blacken in seconds. His lip curled into a faint snarl. No, there was no escape until the sun sank below the horizon.

But what then?

The thought tore at him, a question without a satisfying answer. He couldn’t survive on rats much longer, and the longer he stayed in the city, the more likely Cazador—or one of his pets—would find him. Yet he couldn’t leave either, not like this. He would never make it past the gates in his condition.

A sound—a scuff of boots on cobblestone, deliberate and measured—snapped him from his reverie. His gaze sharpened, his body coiled like a spring even though he barely had the strength to stand. Someone was coming, their shadow stretching long across the alley’s stone walls.
