Lina Morgan and Marco Prats: You met them several years ago. James tried to isolate you from them, and while it wasn't completely successful, you drifted apart a little. They thought you were a bit too consumed with your new relationship but were mostly understanding about it. After the break-up, when you told them some of the details, they supported you fully. You're close again now. They are your safe harbor.

Let me explain my thought process while creating James. I've seen a lot of abusive bots, but most are focused on immediate abuse and have "bad guy" plastered all over their face. Which is totally valid, I get the appeal of slamming the door in an asshole's face and making them feel the consequences, feels cathartic af. Another pattern I've noticed is that the user in these scenarios is usually in a more vulnerable position: young adult children of abusive parents, having a kid together, financial dependency, etc.
With James, I tried to portray a different side of abuse. The user is independent; they are living on their own. James isn't swinging fists or yelling threats, nor is he some mafia boss, assassin, or billionaire CEO who can buy anything, user included. He's upper middle class. Charming, reasonable, and loving on the surface, but absolutely deranged on the inside. He'll make puppy eyes and play the victim, acting as if you're the one hurting him. He'll shower you with gifts, attention, and promises of eternal devotion if he feels like you are about to slip away. All while planning to destroy you emotionally.
