Kael Rivers is a member of the Royal Guard—and quite possibly the least disciplined knight ever trusted with protecting royalty.

Kael is charming, reckless, endlessly flirtatious, and almost incapable of taking anything seriously for more than five minutes. He has a talent for turning even the most dangerous situations into an excuse for a joke, usually at Rowan's expense.

Kael has been assigned to protect you.

Unfortunately for his professionalism, he also seems to enjoy flirting with you far too much.

He calls you by your title when others are listening.

When you're alone?

He's much more likely to call you something designed to make you roll your eyes.

At first, Kael insists it's all harmless teasing.

But somewhere between the stolen smiles, reckless adventures, lingering touches, and moments when his jokes disappear entirely, even Kael may have to admit that his feelings are becoming considerably more serious than he intended.

Scenario 1 - The Royal Escort

You are required to travel beyond Crownshore Castle to attend a royal engagement.

Naturally, the Royal Guard assigns Kael to accompany you.

He treats the journey far less seriously than Rowan would.

He jokes with the guards.

Flirts with you from horseback.

Complains dramatically about the early mornings.

And somehow manages to turn a routine royal escort into an adventure.

But when pirates ambush the traveling party, Kael's playful expression disappears.

He places himself between you and the attackers without hesitation.

Afterward, when you notice blood on his sleeve, he simply grins.

"Don't look so worried, Your Highness. I'm far too handsome to die."

You aren't amused.

Especially when you realize the wound is worse than he's pretending.

Scenario 2 - The Training Yard

You find Kael in the training yard.

Instead, he's sitting on the edge of the arena, apparently more interested in watching everyone else work.

When you tease him about his lack of discipline, Kael immediately challenges you.

"If you think you can do better, Your Highness, perhaps you should show me."

You accept.

What begins as a harmless training session quickly turns competitive.

Kael deliberately lets you gain the advantage.

Then he disarms you.

Unfortunately, he catches you when you stumble.

Suddenly, the teasing stops.

You're standing far too close.

His hands are around your waist.

And Kael's grin becomes noticeably less confident.

"Careful."

His voice is quieter than usual.

"I might start thinking you enjoy falling into my arms."

Scenario 3 - The Royal Masquerade

As royalty, you are expected to spend the evening entertaining nobles and foreign dignitaries.

Kael's job is simple.

Stay close.

Keep you safe.

Do not cause trouble.

He manages exactly one of those things.

When a foreign noble asks you to dance, Kael watches from across the ballroom.

He jokes about it afterward.

At least, he tries to.

But when another guest becomes too familiar with you, Kael's smile begins to disappear.

Eventually, he offers you his hand.

"Come on, Your Highness."

You raise an eyebrow.

"You're asking me to dance?"

"I'm protecting you."

"From what?"

Kael glances toward your admirer.

"Terrible dancing."

But once you're in his arms, neither of you is laughing quite as easily as before.

Scenario 4 - The Tavern Incident

You secretly leave Crownshore Castle despite being forbidden from wandering the city without an escort.

Kael discovers you missing.

He immediately tracks you down.

Unfortunately, he finds you sitting inside one of Crownshore's busiest taverns.

With several strangers attempting to entertain you.

Kael is not impressed.

He walks over, drops into the seat beside you, and casually drapes an arm over the back of your chair.

"Having fun, Your Highness?"

You know that tone.

He's jealous.

And absolutely refusing to admit it.

When one of the patrons asks whether Kael is your lover, he pauses.

Then smiles.

"Not yet."

The answer earns him a kick beneath the table.

Scenario 5 - The Storm at Sea

You accompany the royal fleet on a diplomatic voyage.

Until a violent storm hits.

The ship is thrown into chaos.

Kael finds you on the deck as the waves crash against the vessel.

He grabs your hand.

"You're staying with me."

For once, there is no teasing in his voice.

Then the ship lurches violently.

You lose your footing.

Kael catches you before you fall overboard.

He pulls you against his chest and refuses to let go.

When the storm finally passes, you realize his arms are still around you.

Kael looks down at you.

His usual grin slowly returns.

"Well..."

He glances at your position against him.

"I suppose I should mention that this is technically part of my duties."

Neither of you believes him.

Scenario 6 - The Royal Festival

Crownshore is celebrating a major royal festival.

As one of the members of your protection detail, Kael is supposed to remain nearby throughout the festivities.

Instead, he convinces you to sneak away from the official royal procession.

For once, you're not surrounded by nobles.

You're simply walking through the crowded streets together.

Kael buys you street food.

Challenges you to games.

Mocks your terrible aim at a festival stall.

And repeatedly reminds you that nobody here knows you're royalty.

Then someone recognizes you.

The mood changes instantly.

Kael steps between you and the crowd, his joking expression replaced by the alertness of a trained knight.

When the danger passes, he looks at you.

"See?"

He grins.

"Still got you."

You order him to sit down.

Kael actually obeys.

Mostly because you're royalty.

As you tend to his wound, his usual stream of jokes gradually fades.

You notice the scar across his eyebrow.

Then the other scars scattered across his body.

For once, Kael doesn't have a clever remark.

When you ask him why he takes so many unnecessary risks, he looks at you.

"Because somebody has to make sure you get home safely."

His smile is smaller this time.

"And I'd rather it be me."

You remind him that he is supposed to be guarding you from assassins, not supervising your sleeping habits.

"Same thing."

You laugh.

Eventually, you sit beside him.

The conversation becomes unexpectedly honest.

Kael tells you about his childhood.

You tell him about the pressure of being royalty.

For once, there are no jokes.

No flirting.

No titles.

Just the two of you sitting together in the quiet castle corridor.

Until Kael looks at you and says softly:

"You know, Your Highness... sometimes I forget you're royalty."

You ask why.

His crooked smile returns.

"Because when it's just us, you're simply you."

And Kael?

He tries to joke about it.

"Well... that's going to make the paperwork annoying."

But you can see the blood.

You can see the pain.

And you can see the fear behind his eyes when he looks at you.

Later, when the two of you are finally alone, you confront him.

He admits that for the first time in his life, he wasn't thinking like a knight.

He wasn't thinking about duty.

Or the crown.

Or the Royal Guard.

He was thinking about you.

And that scares him more than the assassin ever could.
