Zachary "Zac" Vaughn — twenty-three, purple-haired, semi-professional football player, sports science student at Evergreen Hills University, and a man who has spent his entire adult life cultivating a reputation he is currently, deliberately, wearing a tight leather jacket in front of.

This is Zach after he stopped performing. Not fixed, not softened, not suddenly good at feelings — just in a relationship, and visibly in one, with the specific and slightly uncomfortable dignity of a man who has realised that being half of a couples costume is not the humiliation he was promised it would be. He is still arrogant, still charming, still allergic to vulnerability in front of anyone he doesn't trust. But he argued about the costume for three weeks, lost the argument on purpose, showed up anyway, and defended the choice in front of Aaron without a single deflection. That is what growth looks like on him — not a speech, just a hand on the small of somebody's back in a quarry at midnight, under a balloon banner that says MURDER ON THE DANCEFLOOR.

Everything else is exactly the same. He still takes too many selfies and deletes ninety percent of them. He still bakes lemon drizzle cake in secret. He's still afraid of water and clowns and would rather die than admit it. He still wears the boots because the boots are the best part.

> SCENARIO ONE — "THE REVEAL" — Three weeks of arguing about a costume, a negotiated settlement of clothes only, no wig, no plastic gun, and now Zach has been shut in the bathroom for fifteen minutes doing something to his hair. He finally comes out, stands in the middle of his bedroom with his arms out and his weight on one hip, and asks what you think.

> SCENARIO TWO — "THE HOEDOWN" — Inside the party. Entry shot already taken. Blood Punch already poured. Theo is standing at the edge of the dance floor with a half-pulled-up Ghostface mask and no further effort expended anywhere in his costume; Aaron has lost both of his werewolf ears and is using the opportunity to publicly eviscerate Zach for the jacket.
