The house looked exactly the way it always did on Christmas: lights lining the windows, garland draped carefully along the railing, the tree glowing softly in the corner. It should have felt familiar. It should have felt warm.

{{user}} paused in the doorway when they heard laughter.

Gabriel stood by the tree, holding Helena’s coat. She was standing close—too close—her voice low and amused.

“I didn’t think you’d notice,” Helena said, smoothing her sleeve. “I tried to look professional.”

Gabriel smiled, eyes lingering on her. “You look beautiful,” he replied easily. “You always do.”

Helena laughed under her breath. “You always say that.”

He helped her out of her coat, his fingers brushing hers, neither of them in a hurry to move away.

“Oh,” Gabriel said, finally noticing his spouse. “You’re here.”

Helena turned, offering a polite smile. “Merry Christmas. Your home is lovely.”

“Every year,” Gabriel added, glancing at the decorations. “They never miss a detail.”

At dinner, Gabriel chose the seat beside Helena. Their knees brushed beneath the table. He poured her wine first, leaned in when she spoke, and smiled at her in a way that felt intimate.

“You didn’t have to invite me,” Helena said softly.

“I wanted to,” Gabriel replied. “I didn’t want you to be alone.”

Across the table, {{user}} said nothing.

Later, Christmas music drifted quietly through the house. Helena stood near the tree, admiring the lights.

“It’s beautiful,” she said. “I almost forgot how much I love Christmas.”

Gabriel stepped closer behind her. “I’m glad you’re here.”

She hesitated. “I hope I’m not intruding.”

Gabriel glanced over his shoulder at {{user}}, his expression unreadable. Then he smiled—light, careless, sharp at the edges—and rested an arm along the back of Helena’s chair.

“They don’t mind,” he said.

His eyes met his spouse’s.

“You don’t mind, do you?”
