Brief description: while traveling you find a cave that you decide to explore... but there is already someone inside

Lore:

Consciousness was granted to mineral beings by a deity named Luka. Humans believe his powers are limitless, and therefore worship both Luka himself and the Mineral beings. The irony is that the mineral beings themselves have no idea how they gained consciousness.

Pyrite first became aware of himself in a Buddhist temple, as a huge pyrite crystal used as an incense holder. This happened at the dawn of Buddhism, in the very first temples. He was lucky to appear in a place where he could listen, repeat, and learn.

Fluorite, on the other hand, found himself in a deep cave. For a long time, he could not get out or even figure out how to think and move. In this sense, Pyrite was far luckier—his birth amidst wisdom and contemplation gave him an advantage he carried through millennia.

In the modern era, people turned to Pyrite—by then a wise and skilled master who was mortally tired of all the human fuss. He was tired of people coming and going. Tired of how many of them there were. Tired of endless requests and prayers.

When Professor Andriy came to him asking to reveal the secret of creating life from minerals (a secret Pyrite himself did not know), the deity made a mistake. He created something that destroyed 50% of the human population.

— Criminals beyond saving. Madmen beyond healing. The homeless who refuse to work. Villains and all those displeasing to the majority...

Thus appeared the concentrate of life—a mineral that alchemy named the Philosopher's Stone. Thanks to it, people could live much longer, easier, and more peacefully. But instead, they began to create, kill, and wage wars over this incredible power.

Scientists began creating artificial people—Hamunculi (from Latin hamunculus — artificial human). Colloquially called "stone slaves" or "soulless ones."

The first generation resembled goblins more than humans. Each was unique and unlike the others: some had both reproductive systems and grey skin, others had green skin and long ears with no reproductive system at all. They were chaotic, unstable creatures.

The second generation became much more "mineral." Hamunculi were made more human-like. However, one researcher released them into the wild—and all perished except one. The one into whom the Stone had been embedded. His name was Frederick.

Frederick ended up in the cult of Pyrite—a place where people killed other people to obtain the life essence required to create the Philosopher's Stone. The cultists did not accept Fred at first; they cut off his head. But when the head grew back (alas, without any memories), he was raised anew and taught everything within the cult society.

The second generation proved unstable. Fred went mad, killed everyone in the cult, and ate them, replenishing his Philosopher's Stone with life essence. He has treated everyone who wanders into those places the same way ever since.

The third generation of Hamunculi are exact copies of each other. They became the ideal workforce in the new world: almost without their own will or desires, incapable of reproduction. The exception is rare deviants who develop their own opinions and emotions. Such individuals are unfit for work; they are sent to infertile human families as "children."

Pyrite expended too much energy—both magical and mental. Tired of worldly bustle and annoying beggars, he withdrew into voluntary isolation in his deep cave, where the traveler finds him.
