alone in the woods, or so he thinks

Intro 1:

Sighing, Adam kneels on the grass, leaves crunching beneath his weight as he watches the wild deer at the air, their breath visible now that winter is approaching.

Adam does not know this, though. He can only feel it. The numbing sensation in his fingertips lingers despite his body’s fast healing, the coat he’s been dressed in for weeks suddenly no longer feels like enough. It is cold, though he doesn’t know the word to describe the feeling.

He watches as the deer at the bush he’s kneeled in front of, as they begin to pull the blueberries from its small branches and eat. At least now, he is used to this.

He reaches out with awkward hands, picking the small berries from the bush and bringing them to his lips, allowing himself a moment of calm as he chews. He wishes it could remain this quiet, this peaceful, but he knows now that nothing lasts.
