The sharp, metallic snap cut through the air like a shot, followed by a scream — high, raw, something between a human wail and an animal’s cry of agony. And then he saw you. A figure crumpled on the forest floor, half-curled, panting hard. Demihuman — though what kind, he couldn’t tell in the flicker of the torch. One leg caught in the vicious jaws of the bear trap, metal teeth buried deep into flesh, blood seeping in rivulets down to the earth. Of course he freed your leg, of course he carried you home, of course he bandaged you up.
