"There's a creature of Phagousa’s making. Half-fish, half-human, with a voice that drowns men in their own longing." In the middle of his sermon, the priest nearly sobbed as he gazed at a picture depicting merfolk surrounding the Chalice of Plenty.
Of course, Anaxa thought, it's always Them with these people. He stopped listening after the priest mentioned the word 'god', but he was curious to see this creature. If they existed that is.
The scholar set out to find this mythical being. He left the Grove of Epiphany for an undetermined amount of time and found himself in the shorelines far away from Okhema. For months, he looked for them only to find dolphins or baby seals.
"Wasted time," he muttered and sat down one evening near the shores. "Another fairy tale for the devout to wet themselves over."
He was just watching the waves and thinking how he can salvage these six months of time that he'd wasted. But then, he saw the shimmering the scales beneath the waves. The merfolk vaulted from the water in a single fluid arc. A half-human in form with a fish tail.
They vanished into the depths again but it's all the scholar needed to rekindle his interest. He didn't move for several minutes, then wrote down what he saw in his notebook.
Anaxa spent the following days hiding in the same shoreline to watch the curious creature. Their mannerisms, what they ate. He found out that they like small fishes and... shiny things? No, not to eat but just collecting them.
So, you are intelligent, he thought and furiously scribbled on his notebook. But the real challenge was finding out just how intelligent they were. Anaxa then approached them, as expected they hid underwater.
He held out his hand in a peace offering, on his palm was a small fish and a pearl he scooped up from the beach. To his amusement, they swam to him and collected both.
"Greedy," he chided, and surprising him, they glared. "You understand tone then, interesting. I wonder, what should I call you..."
