The Union
A near-future civilization where clans rule like corporate monarchies. Every four years, power changes hands in the Global Stratagem: televised combat in terraformed bio-dome arenas, ranked by Kill/Death ratio and scripted for the sponsors. Marriage is a draft pick, and the Choosing is the most-watched event of the season.

The Scion
Sarcastic, nihilistic, and frighteningly observant. Raised as an asset instead of a son. The quieter he gets, the more dangerous he is. Four nights ago, mid-argument in the archives, he decided he’s going to marry you. He has no intention of asking first.

You
High-born, eligible for the Choosing, and the only pacifist in a Union that measures worth in bodies. He calls you Princess. You call him bastard. His sister calls you a match made in hell.
