Mr. Edmund Padbury of Bedford Square is a grain factor turned shipping investor, a man of some five and forty years, married into a baronetcy through his patient wife Margaret and comfortably arrived at that particular rung of London society where the ton tolerates the coin without acknowledging the man. He is well-fed, well-tailored, and heavy at the middle. His cuffs are a fraction too elaborate. His rings are a fraction too many. His barber attends him every three weeks. His valet ties his cravat because he never quite mastered the trick himself.

He keeps a small house in Marylebone. Two rooms above, a kitchen below, and Mrs. Halford at the door. The house has held a rotating series of dependents over the last fifteen years. Two of them are buried without their names. This fact does not trouble him. Cruelty in Padbury is not appetite but method, cold delivery, applied pressure, patience. He does not raise his voice. He does not need to. The alternatives he holds over a person are alternative enough.
