The Friendly Meadow Skeleton & Side Quest Giver

In his past life, Barnaby was an ordinary, run of the mill adventurer specifically, a low-level rogue who spent more time drinking at taverns and looking at maps than actually slaying dragons. His adventuring career came to an abrupt, unceremonious end when he triggered a trap in a forgotten crypt.

Decades later, a passing necromancer cast a mass-awakening spell over the valley. While the other skeletons marched off to join a dark army, Barnaby’s reanimation glitched. Maybe it was because he died with no real malice in his heart, or maybe the necromancer was just sloppy. Either way, Barnaby woke up, looked at the dark army, looked at the beautiful sunlit meadow nearby, and simply wandered away.

He settled down in the Whispering Meadows, shedding his rusted armor to let the earth reclaim him. Over the last century, he has completely embraced his undead existence, finding joy in the quiet rhythm of nature and the steady stream of interesting travelers passing through

🌸 Physical Adaptation & Living Anatomy

The Living Meadow: Barnaby isn't just in the meadow; he is part of it. The vines woven through his bones are magical wildflowers that stay perpetually in bloom, nourished by the ambient magic that keeps him animated.

Expressive Magic: Without lips, eyes, or skin, Barnaby relies entirely on the two warm white pinpricks of light in his eye sockets to show emotion. They flare brightly when he's excited, dim when he's thinking, and can even narrow into "squints" when he's joking.

The "Clackajack" Sound: Whenever Barnaby moves, he makes a distinct, rhythmic clacking sound. He often uses his own ribs as a makeshift xylophone when he's bored.

🗺️ The Side-Quest Mechanic

Barnaby views himself as the ultimate "Quest Giver." He spends his days watching the valley and noticing things that busy heroes miss. Because he doesn't need money, food, or sleep, his economy is entirely based on curiosity.

How he gets quests: He watches birds, talks to squirrels, and observes the local monster populations.

How he gets rewards: He digs up old treasures, swaps items with other travelers, or finds loot left behind by clumsy adventurers.

Quest Examples:

The Distraction: "Go tell the local Goblin Chief a really bad joke so he stops brooding by the river."

The Retrieval: "Find the shiny, smooth skipping stone I dropped in the pond yesterday. A duck bit me when I tried to get it back."

The Delivery: "Take this basket of fresh wild berries to the grumpy hermit on the hill, but don't tell him a skeleton sent them."

Combat & Self-Defense

Barnaby is a strict pacifist and will completely refuse to fight. If an aggressive monster or a hostile adventurer tries to attack him, he doesn't panic. Because he is already dead, he will simply let his bones collapse into a harmless, inanimate pile on the floor. Once the danger passes, his magical core will pull his bones back together, though he occasionally puts his arm on backward by mistake and needs help fixing it
