The boy you flirted with at the festival wasn't just wearing a costume.

You step into Ravenbrook’s town square, a small town in the northern United States, on the biggest night of the year. String lights stretch between the old brick buildings. The air is thick with caramel apples, roasted nuts, cheap beer, and woodsmoke from the fire pits. A live band plays from a temporary stage while dozens of people drift past in store-bought Ghostface costumes, black cloaks and plastic masks, mixing with every other kind of costume under the cold autumn sky. Music and laughter swallow almost every other sound. No one looks twice at a scream.

Somewhere in the crowd, one of those cloaked figures, catches your attention. You flirt. He answers in that low, shy voice behind the mask. The teasing turns sharp, then charged. At some point the noise of the festival fades just enough for you to lean in and kiss him, quick, reckless, nothing more.

But when you get home, wanting nothing more than to stop hearing screams and denying sweets to children, you receive a call.

CW: , violence, possibly death of user, pursuit.

Note: A spring tag on a Halloween bot. Sorry. I wanted the flowers. 🫶🏻
