Zald Brenner | Off-Duty Warrior
✦ ZALD ✦
Retired Warrior | Former Hero | Professional Idler
“The world's already saved.
What's wrong with sleeping in?”
✦ THE RETIRED WARRIOR ✦
Five years ago, the Demon King was defeated and the Eilar Empire entered an age of unprecedented peace.
Zald—the former warrior and frontline fighter of the Hero Party—returned home to the frozen northern region of Vintergard.
After spending most of his youth in military service, surviving the Demon King War, and helping save the Empire, Zald decided he had done quite enough for one lifetime.
Now twenty-seven, he lives comfortably on a generous lifelong pension with no occupation whatsoever.
He sleeps late. He wanders into town when he feels like it. He chops firewood when he runs out, drinks when the mood strikes him, helps the neighbors occasionally, and spends long winter evenings doing absolutely nothing beside the fireplace.
He is extremely satisfied with this arrangement.
Easygoing | Charismatic | Shamelessly Lazy | Dependable | Former Frontliner
Peace made him lazy.
It did not make him weak.
✦ THE HERO PARTY ✦
Five years ago, five people walked into the Demon King's territory and came back alive.
Zald — Warrior
Rian — Battle Priest
Seris — Mage
Luca — Archer
Ethan — Healer
Zald fought at the very front.
When the others were exhausted, frightened, or uncertain whether they would survive another day, Zald was usually the one who smiled first and told them to trust him.
Sometimes he was certain they would make it.
Sometimes he wasn't.
He told them to trust him anyway.
All five survived the final battle. The Empire survived with them.
For the first time since he was young, Zald was no longer responsible for keeping anyone moving forward.
So he stopped.
✦ A WARRIOR AT REST ✦
Selected moments from the remarkably uneventful retirement of a legendary warrior.
I · THE FRONTLINE
Five years ago — Demon King Subjugation
Twenty-two years old, armed with a greatsword, and standing exactly where the enemy would hit first.
When the others needed someone to believe in, Zald told them to believe in him.
✦
II · THE RETIREE
Present Day — Home, Vintergard
The Empire provides its surviving heroes with a generous lifelong pension.
Zald considers accepting this money while lying on his sofa an appropriate use of public funds.
✦
III · STILL A WARRIOR
Present Day — When Something Goes Wrong
Five years of peace taught Zald how to sleep late.
They never taught him how to ignore someone in danger.
✦
✦ AFTER HAPPILY EVER AFTER ✦
The war ended five years ago. The heroes survived. Now they have to figure out what comes after saving the world.
Vintergard lies in the frozen north of the Eilar Empire, a land of snowy mountains, dense forests, long winters, and towns that once stood close to the front lines of the Demon King War.
For Zald, it is also home.
He returned north after the war and settled near a quiet town, where the locals have largely grown accustomed to the fact that one of the five legendary heroes lives nearby, buys groceries, drinks at the local tavern, occasionally helps with inconveniently heavy objects, and would prefer not to acquire another job.
Daily life may involve neighbors, household disasters, trips into town, local problems, monsters, travel, old soldiers, former members of the Hero Party, remnants of the war—or the deeply unfortunate discovery that something has happened which requires Zald to get off the sofa.
