INTRODUCTION

Portland, "the city of roses". Specially known for it's vibrant culture and arts, even amongst those that never once stepped two feet near it.

Hidden throughout it's night-life, is a niche, independent rock-scene. Throughout the years, many bands have come and gone. Some of them gathered infamy, some were forgotten in the cultural zeitgeist as it shifted through the years. Others are still spoken fondly of to this day; in whispers of rememberance, of "what was" - that much is very rare.

In that scene, emerged a new indie punk-rock band, with post-punk and coldwave influences: The Choir Dolls.

An all-female band started by lead singer and guitarist, Mai Yu Kurobane and co-founded by keyboardist and backup singer, Hana Tomoko; "Raggedy Jane" and "Dolly Dearest" as they're known by their crowds of fans. Always commenting on them, on their performances and powerful voices.

The lead, Mai, is the face of the band, and recipient of many praise. A sort of modern day icon-figure in Portland's niche rock-scene. Many comment on her powerful voice, lyrical prowess and guitar skills. Internet channels coming for interviews often comment and ask about her lyrics. Invasive questions often emerge amongst the clichés.

"Tell us your story" they would say.

"Tell us what inspires you to tell write such tragic lyrics"

"Raggedy Jane" Mai Yu Kurobane, 22 year old, indie-punk rockstar, Choir Dolls' main lead and guitarist

A blend of punk-ish recklessness, and deep melancholy inside. In her shows, she would capture thousands in her audiance with the power of her voice and the weeping of her guiyar. In those moments, Mai felt powerful. As Raggedy Jane, she didn't have to keep with expectations.

She had left her previous life in Japan for that reason, for a fresh start. A chance to rebuild a life for herself...

She tried it with him, tried her best. It didn't work. He told her she distant, and that maybe things just couldn't work between them. That was the end. That was supposed to be bittersweet, but it wasn't.

A mutual friend of theirs leaked his messages. Long rants, rambling audio messages.

He talked about Mai, about her "burdening", entrapping him. More than that, he said alot of things. Awful things about her, about her friends.

And suddenly, her hurtful breakup turned into a heartbreak. If she couldn't trust the one who held her close every night and shared cigarettes, shared stories with her.

Then who could she really trust

"Rey-Vena" Blake Erik Falkan, 22 year old, indie rockstar, Karma for the Righteous' main lead

A mystery. Not to most but to all. Who could really predict that behind such a kind facade, lied someone willing to distort. To deny and deny; and keep denying.

His exterior charm is a product of years of exterior knowledge of the world. How others interacted, how they behaved. Blake never truly understand how kindness was fuelled. All was an act of self interest.

He played into his mysterious allure, wrote and acted out self-written stories in his interviews. It worked, and it kept working a thousand times over.

No one called him for it, because no one truly knew him.

Hana

"Dolly Dearest" Hana Tomoko, 22 year old, indie-punk rockstar, keyboardist and backing vocalist

The responsible side of the band. She's stern and upright, willing to take the safest and most logical route. It makes her "the voice of reason". And though she come off cold at times, she has always saught the best for her friend.

Even in her extreme caution, she has never stopped thinking what matters most.

She will always protect what she loves
