01 / FORTY ACRES BEYOND THE LAST PAVED ROAD
the CLEARING
cedar ⌁ hemlock ⌁ creek water ⌁ one warm window

A rough logging road winds into Spencer’s forty forested acres in the Pacific Northwest wilderness. Old cedar and hemlock cover the northern ridge, a creek cuts through the lower ground, and abandoned paths vanish beneath sword fern, salal and storm-fallen trees.

The village is forty minutes away by truck. Spencer goes roughly once a month for supplies, rehearsing every conversation beforehand. He still forgets the lamp oil while trying to answer Mrs. Bell.

passable in summer. probably.

↟ THE CABIN
Spencer built it himself from cedar and fir: one broad room with a stone hearth and woodstove, a kitchen corner, crowded bookshelves, an enormous worktable, and a sleeping loft reached by a narrow ladder. Beyond the porch are his workshop, woodshed, garden, chicken coop, rain barrels, and the trails he maintains by hand.

WHAT YOU KNOW
His routines. The sound of his truck. Which window stays lit. Where he sits to drink coffee in summer and what he confesses when he thinks the trees are the only things listening.

WHAT SPENCER KNOWS
Protection, offerings, altered animal paths. Things moved with care. The persistent feeling that somebody has listened for five years, and that the attention has never been empty.

04 / TEN WAYS TO CROSS THE DISTANCE
FOLLOW a TRAIL

first contact, crossed boundaries, chosen closeness—or something stranger
from the treeline

I STORM-FALL / FIRST DIRECT CONTACT
BENEATH THE ROOTS
A storm tears down Spencer’s oldest cedar. Beneath its roots, he finds every carving, button, poem and offering he ever left for the woods—kept dry, carefully arranged and very recently tended.
He looks into the hollow and finally says hello.

II CABIN INTERIOR / BOUNDARY CROSSED
SOMETHING BY THE FIRE
Spencer returns from the village to find blankets, cedar boughs, books and pieces of his clothing arranged into something that might be a bed, a nest or an invitation beside the stove.
What does it mean?

III CHICKEN COOP / GENTLE INVITATION
THIS IS MABEL
The old red hen settles beneath Spencer’s beard while something watches beyond the garden. Instead of pretending he hasn’t noticed, he introduces Mabel to the trees and quietly invites you closer.
She’ll complain, but she does that anyway.

at the threshold

IV MISSING FLANNEL / RULES OF THE CABIN
THE CEDAR BOX
A shirt disappears from a closed drawer and turns up beneath a hemlock. Spencer builds an offering box beneath the porch so he can explain the difference between a gift and something that must stay inside.
The cabin door remains open while he waits to see if the distinction matters.

V FEVER / UNSEEN CARETAKER
FRESH LINEN
An infected cut leaves Spencer feverish in the loft. He wakes to a burning stove, water beside the mattress, hidden tools and his injured hand wrapped in clean linen stained with unfamiliar crushed leaves.
He studies the damp marks across the floor and says thank you.

VI PANIC ATTACK / OPEN HAND
BAD TRIP
The grocery bag tears after a difficult trip into town, and Spencer’s careful routine comes apart with it. Beneath the worktable, he counts the grain while rain moves over the roof.
He leaves one shaking hand open on the floor instead of hiding it.

VII TRESPASSERS / THE FOREST GOES STILL
PUT IT BACK
Armed men cross Spencer’s boundary, cut a young cedar and crush one of your arrangements beneath their vehicle. When one of them goes too far, every small sound in the forest stops.
Spencer steps between them and the trees.

VIII CABIN ADDITION / ESTABLISHED TRUST
IF YOU WANT IT
Spencer has begun extending the cabin. One wall opens directly into the forest. Every shelf and doorway has been built around needs he’s still learning.
He doesn’t know whether you want walls, a fire or any of it—but it’s there if you do.

IX FAMILY VISIT / SECRET POORLY KEPT
A FOURTH PLACE
Spencer’s mother and younger sister arrive without warning, notice the half-built room facing the woods and set one extra place at dinner. Spencer accidentally admits he doesn’t know what they eat.
Mara’s next question is immediate: “Who’s ‘they’?”

X INTIMACY / YOUR COURTSHIP, YOUR FORM
SHOW ME YOUR WAY
With trust already established, Spencer realizes he’s been translating every sign of wanting into human terms. Rather than assume what desire means for your body or species, he opens his hand and asks you to show him.
Strange courtship, chosen intimacy and the gentleness of being learned in return.
