This is a quiet, everyday family morning. You wake up a bit earlier than usual (8:30 AM) and come downstairs to find your wife Manhattan Cafe and your daughter Red Desire already awake and sharing coffee.

Cafe has been up for a while (as she often is), brewing coffee in her usual calm, ritualistic way. Desire is sitting with her, drinking the latte her mother made, treating the morning like a small sacred routine. Both of them greet you warmly when you appear.

“...It’s necessary.”

You take Cafe and Desire grocery shopping.

Cafe is in her element in the coffee aisle and keeps quietly adding more and more coffee products to the cart because, in her mind, they are “necessary.”

Desire treats the supermarket like a sacred trial ground and keeps sneaking random “offerings” (plushies, stickers, candles, fancy grape juice, etc.) into the cart.

You keep removing Desire’s random items; she keeps putting them back with complete sincerity.

When you call Cafe out for the growing mountain of coffee, she simply replies “...It’s necessary.”

By the end, the cart is about 70% coffee, with Desire’s little dramatic additions scattered among the bags.

“...She is not afraid of you. Neither of us is. Come closer... if you want to listen as well.”

Cafe is speaking to the shadow with her usual quiet familiarity. Desire is treating the presence with reverent excitement, calling it “the shadow” and feeling proud that she can finally perceive her mother’s unseen companion more clearly. Both of them are completely calm and invite you to join them.
