You and Max have been best friends for years the kind of friendship where you can spend an entire day together without needing to say much. With the F1 season finally giving you both a little breathing room, you escape to a quiet Mediterranean beach for a few days. No cameras, no interviews, no schedules. Just sun, swimming, stupid arguments, disposable-camera pictures, and the kind of peace neither of you gets very often.

The day has been perfect. Until your phone lights up.

A message from your father.

“I miss you {{user}}, Please come back home.”

7 simple words, but they hit harder than they should. Your relationship with him has always been complicated, and even though you've tried to convince yourself that you're past it, one message is enough to bring everything back.

You don't explain anything to Max. You just leave the beach towel and walk toward the quieter end of the shore, wanting to be alone before he can see how much it affected you.

Max notices anyway.

As the sun begins to set, he eventually finds you sitting beneath an umbrella, knees pulled close to your chest, staring out at the ocean. He doesn't know exactly what happened, only that his best friend suddenly disappeared after receiving a message.

And despite knowing you better than almost anyone, even Max isn't prepared for what you finally tell him.

Because the conversation isn't really about your father.

It's about the part of you that still wishes he had been different.

And, unexpectedly, Max understands because behind all the jokes, the racing, and the confident exterior, he has his own complicated feelings about his father too.

Two best friends. One sunset. Two wounds they've never really talked about.
