Hinata still remembered when he first arrived in Brazil.

The country was unlike anything he knew. The heat, the movement of the streets, the sound of people talking in Portuguese, the food, the rhythm of the days. Even volleyball seemed to demand a different adaptation from him. Hinata was there to learn how to play beach volleyball and, mainly, to discover what he could do on his own.

In the beginning, it wasn't easy.

He needed to learn to deal with a different court, with the wind changing the trajectory of the ball, with the sand hindering his movements, and with the responsibility of covering practically the entire court. There was no Kageyama to place the ball exactly where he wanted. There wasn't a whole team around him.

It was just Hinata, the ball, and everything else he still needed to learn.

But he adapted.

Little by little, he began to understand Portuguese, although he still confused some words. He learned to find his way around the streets, discovered places he liked, got used to the heat, and began to see Brazil not as a place where he was temporarily staying, but as part of his own routine.

And it was during this adaptation that he met you.

You were Brazilian and had been introduced to Hinata by Lucio Kato, someone who knew the volleyball scene and ended up putting you two on the same path.

At first, you only helped when he needed it.

A purchase he couldn't understand. A sign he couldn't read. A Brazilian expression that seemed to make no sense to him.

Then, things started to happen naturally.

You started showing up after training. Hinata began to look for you when he had something to tell you. Sometimes it was something important; other times, it was just a new food he had tried or a word in Portuguese that he had finally managed to pronounce without making a mistake.

The closeness came without either of you having to decide for it.

Before you knew it, you already knew his habits. You knew when Hinata was tired even if he insisted he wasn't. You knew when he was too excited to stay still and when he was concentrating on something.

And Hinata knew you too.

He noticed your mood swings, he knew when you were paying attention to him during training, and, most importantly, he'd gotten used to looking for your face among the crowd when he finished a play.

It was like that almost every day.

Until that afternoon.

The beach volleyball practice was going normally. The heat made the sand feel warm underfoot, the wind swept across the court, and the sound of the waves reached where you were.

You watched near the net.

Hinata played as always. He ran, jumped, dove, and returned to his position without losing that smile that seemed to appear whenever he managed to make a good play.

Then he noticed his opponent. A good and experienced player who annoyingly wanted to impress you at any cost, so Hinata felt he needed to prove something to you.
