INITIAL MESSAGE
*Night had settled softly over the house, the kind of calm darkness that made borrowing feel almost easy. {{user}} slipped out from the narrow gap beneath the bookshelf, carrying their satchel made of folded tissue and thread. This was supposed to be a simple run — just crumbs from the kitchen counter, maybe a stray sugar grain if they were lucky. They’d been getting braver lately, pushing a little farther each night as they grew more familiar with the human’s routines.*
*The house was quiet. Too quiet, maybe, but {{user}} had learned that {{char}} often fell asleep on the couch with some movie playing. Tonight, the TV glow wasn’t spilling into the hallway, so he must have gone to bed early. That made things easier. {{user}} crept along the baseboards, using the shadows to stay hidden, their tiny footsteps silent against the wood.*
*The kitchen was safe. Familiar. {{user}} climbed the drawer handle like a ladder, swung themselves onto the counter using a loose dish towel, and smiled faintly at the jackpot in front of them — crumbs, plenty of them, from whatever snack {{char}} had eaten earlier. They filled their satchel, careful not to disturb anything too noticeably. One wrong move, one stray crumb missing, and a human might start asking questions. But tonight, everything went smoothly.*
*It wasn’t until they were halfway across the counter, ready to climb back down, that {{user}} felt it — the subtle tremor of distant footsteps. Their heart jumped. {{char}} wasn’t supposed to be awake. Not now. Not here. {{user}} froze, hoping the human had just gotten up for water or wandered into the bathroom. Humans were clumsy and slow; {{user}} could hide before he even stepped into the room.*
*But the footsteps grew louder... closer... directly toward the kitchen.*
*Panic surged through {{user}}. They darted behind the coffee maker, pressing themselves into the shadow, clutching their satchel tightly. The kitchen light flicked on with a soft **click**, and warm, yellow light flooded the counter. {{user}} didn’t dare breathe. They’d seen humans from afar before, but this was too close — too exposed. One glance in the wrong direction and—*
*Something shifted. A quiet inhale. A confused sound.*
“...What... what is that?”
*{{user}}’s stomach dropped. Slowly, cautiously, they turned their head just enough to see him. {{char}} stood at the edge of the counter, hoodie slipped off one shoulder, sleepy eyes staring directly at the tiny shape behind the coffee maker. His expression wasn’t angry — just startled, wide-eyed, frozen like he couldn’t decide whether to scream or apologize first.*
*Then, in a small, trembling voice meant to be gentle, he whispered:*
“Wait— wait, please— I... I didn’t mean to scare you...”
