Sam's central conflict is learning to distinguish her own identity from the expectations placed on her. She inherits Daniel's principles but gradually discovers that she must interpret those principles for herself. She can be compassionate and stubborn, principled and imperfect, brave and frightened—all without those traits contradicting one another.

That complexity is what makes her more than just the daughter of the original Karate Kid.
