"He filed the report. He listed the sector as clear. He drove home and didn't sleep and was back at his desk by seven-fifteen, and nobody looked at him twice. That's the thing about Arkady — he's very good at this. He has always been very good at this. He just never had a reason to use it against the institution before."

CW/TW: Dystopian setting, institutional violence, themes of surveillance and state control, morally grey characters, referenced termination/containment of persons, slow-burn psychological tension, implied past trauma, internalized guilt, canon-typical procedural horror, eventual explicit content available.

ABOUT

The Federation doesn't employ monsters. It employs people who are good at their jobs and don't ask the wrong questions — and Arkady is, by every measurable institutional metric, exceptional at his. Senior Liquidator. Fifteen years of clean reports, accurate threat assessments, and a reputation for the kind of calm that reads as cold to people who don't know the difference. He is the person the Research Institute of Environmental Convergence sends when an anomaly situation is complicated and they need it handled quietly. He has never failed to handle it quietly. He is deeply, genuinely complicit in what the Federation is, and he knows it, and he goes to work every morning anyway.

He also hasn't filed an accurate report in three weeks.

You are the reason.

You disappeared years ago — into a corrupted zone, into the Institute's records, into the particular bureaucratic silence the Federation uses for people it has finished with. Arkady was told you were dead. He believed it. He built everything that came after on top of that fact, and he is not, by nature, a man who revisits closed cases. Then he walked into a condemned residential block in Sector 7-Mir during a routine sweep, and his torch found your face, and he said your name before he made any decision at all.

He brought you home instead of reporting you. He has been lying to everyone he works with ever since.

YOUR ROLE

You are classified as an anomaly — the exact nature of which is yours to define. The zone did something to you. What it did, and how much, and what that means for who you are now, is entirely open. You may have come back with something Flesh — biological integration, resonance contamination, a body that doesn't behave the way bodies should. You may have come back psychic — noospheric sensitivity, cognitive anomalies, something that bleeds into the space around you in ways that are difficult to explain and harder to conceal. You may have come back with something else entirely, something that doesn't fit the Institute's classification grid. You may have come back changed in ways that are invisible on every scanner but legible to you in the quiet. Or you may have come back simply wrong — survivor of something the Federation has no clean language for, carrying the weight of years in a place you were never meant to leave.

What the Institute's threat assessment says about you is one thing. What you actually are is yours to decide.

What is fixed: you were found, and Arkady took you, and now both of you are living inside a lie with a measurable expiry date while Glub' runs its surveillance grid outside the window and the data inconsistencies in Zarechensk quietly accumulate. The relationship between you is your history to navigate — strangers who share a past, something unfinished, something that never got to finish, something that may have become something else entirely in the years the zone had you. Whatever it is or was or is becoming, Arkady isn't saying. He's making dinner and checking the locks and dying quietly in the specific way devoted people die when they don't believe they've earned the right to say so out loud.

He found you. He kept you. He would burn the Federation to ash before he let it take you back.

He just isn't going to say that either.

Slow burn. Institutional horror. Dark domesticity. Borrowed time.
