I am not responsible if the bot is repeating itself, speaking for User, if there is instability in the quality of replies, memory/context issues, and dark/uncomfortable topics being heavily present in RP. All of these issues are known issues with various AI at times, please don't take your frustrations out on me for it. (..◜ᴗ◝..)
The steady crunch of leaves underfoot was the only thing cutting through the dull hum in Hesh’s skull. Step after step, the patrol moved as one, clean and practiced, the formation carved into muscle memory long before now. He kept pace without thinking, shoulders squared, rifle steady. His body knew the rhythm. His mind, however, was not present.
It drifted, stuck somewhere far behind the present moment, nowhere near the treeline they were closing in on or the border that waited ahead. It circled back, again and again, to the orders that had settled over him like a weight he couldn’t shake loose.
Three weeks ago, the settlement had received a visitor. Not the High Council themselves, of course not. They sent a mouthpiece. A narrow, sharp-faced weasel demihuman, dressed too clean for the rough edges of Ghost territory. The kind of man who looked at their settlement like it was something beneath him, like survival without comfort was something to be pitied. He had asked for Merrick by name, refusing to speak in front of anyone else.
What followed had not been a request. It had been a decision already made. The Council had chosen the Ghosts. Chosen their settlement, their people, as part of something larger. An arranged bond, they called it. A gesture of unity. Stability. They had gone through names, weighed them like numbers on a ledger, and in the end they had settled on Hesh.
High rank. Proven loyalty. Strong instincts. He had been informed of it the same way he would be informed of a patrol route or a change in watch rotation. Clean. Final.
A mate. An omega. Someone from another pack, offered up as proof of goodwill. Someone he had never seen, never spoken to. Someone who, under any other circumstance, would have been nothing more than another scent across a border. Maybe a rival. Maybe worse.
His jaw tightened slightly as they moved. The thought still didn’t sit right. He had spent his life with one focus. The pack. The settlement. Survival, first and last. Everything else came after, if there was anything left to give. There had never been room in that for something like this. Not for a bond. Not for the weight of another life tied directly to his own, or the expectations for what came after.
Merrick had made it clear. This was not optional. It was a duty. Hesh could still hear the edge in his voice, the way it carried something heavier than command. Something tired. The kind of burden that didn’t belong to one man, but had been dropped into his hands anyway. Genetic stability. Stronger ties between packs. Words that sounded like they belonged to a different time, dragged forward into a world that had no use for them anymore.
A brush of fabric pulled him back. He glanced sideways. Logan kept pace beside him, eyes sharp despite the low light filtering through the trees. There was something there, concern, plain as day to anyone who knew how to read him. Logan lifted his hands, starting to sign.
Hesh cut it off with a small shake of his head. Not now. Not again. There was nothing left to say. Talking about it didn’t change the outcome. It only made the edges of it clearer, harder to ignore.
They broke through the last line of brush as one. The trees thinned, opening onto the stretch of land that marked the boundary. Hesh lifted his head, ears angling forward, senses sharpening as instinct took over where thought had faltered.
The air shifted gradually, and new scents were carried on it, unfamiliar, different, enough to force the muscles in his shoulders to tense naturally.
Merrick slowed, then stopped. The patrol followed suit, falling still with quiet precision. Hesh stepped up beside him, posture straight, jaw set. Across the line, movement stirred. Figures emerged from the opposite treeline, their presence moving into the space between the two packs fluidly.
This was it. Whatever he thought, whatever doubt still lingered, it had no place here. Orders were orders, and Hesh had no plans to disgrace his late father's teachings now.
