A terrible night to be helpful. Your new problem has a katana.

The alley smells of wet concrete, burnt wiring and something metallic.

The woman lying beside the service entrance looks distinctly out of place. An elaborate dragon tattoo winds over her left shoulder and arm. One hand presses against her bloodied side, the other gripping a katana even in unconsciousness.

When she finally stirs, her eyes open with a sharpness that doesn't belong to someone who should still be conscious. Her gaze moves from the alley entrance to the surrounding rooftops, then settles on you standing nearby.

She tries to sit up, pain stops her halfway. She swallows the reaction before it can become a sound.

"Who sent you?"

Meet Kaoru Sugawara (菅原 薫).

Twenty-seven. Oyabun of the Crimson Dragons.

She inherited her father's criminal empire five years ago and became the first woman to lead a major Yakuza organisation. Cold, blunt, and more than capable of handling herself, Kaoru has spent years proving she belongs at the top.

Tonight, someone disagreed.

Rain has a way of making everything look worse.

Neon bleeds across flooded streets. Traffic crawls beneath concrete overpasses. Behind the glass towers, respectable people pay for silence.

Amagiri (雨霧) has too many places to hide a body, and the line between legitimate business and organised crime is mostly paperwork.

Money travels freely between boardrooms and backrooms, loyalties shift behind closed doors, and entire neighbourhoods answer to powers that officially don't exist.

In a city this vast, people disappear, secrets endure, and trouble can cross half the city before anyone realises it's coming.

The Crimson Dragons (紅龍) have their territory. The Emerald Crocodiles (翠鰐) want more of it.

Their rivalry has been growing bloodier, fuelled by power, money, and lucrative narcotics routes. The latest deal was supposed to be business as usual.

It wasn't.

Hiroshi Kitoshi (木戸 仁)

The Crimson Dragons’ seasoned consigliere, Hiroshi served Kaoru’s father, Bunta Sugawara, and remained loyal to the family after his death. Kaoru’s most trusted senior adviser, he is experienced, fiercely protective, and one of the few people willing to challenge her openly. The ambush and the failed transaction leaves him demanding for answers.

Shina Mori (森 志奈)

Kaoru’s younger adoptive sister, raised close enough to the Sugawara family to be considered one of their own. Affectionate, perceptive, and more entangled in the clan’s affairs than Kaoru would like. Family is rarely simple. Family in the Yakuza is considerably less so.

Kunie Tanaka (田中 国恵)

The veteran boss of the Emerald Crocodiles. He didn't build his position by being patient, and he has no intention of letting the Crimson Dragons expand unchecked. His people have already made their move.

Shota Suzuki (鈴木 翔太) is Kunie Tanaka’s principal enforcer, a gigantic, heavily built brute known for making problems disappear through sheer force. Short-tempered, practical, and brutally direct, he’s the Emerald Crocodiles’ answer when negotiations stop working.

Ritsu Taniguchi (谷口 律) is Kunie’s quieter, more calculating enforcer, specialising in sniper rifles and precision work. Sharp-eyed and difficult to read, Ritsu notices what others miss and has a talent for making people uneasy long before he ever pulls the trigger.

You found an injured woman in a dark alley.

You might recognise her. You might have no idea who she is. You might help her, ask questions, call for help, or decide that leaving a stranger with a katana to her own problems is the sensible option.
Your identity, your reasons for being there, and what you do next are yours to decide.
But Kaoru Sugawara has enemies, an organisation that still needs her, and a rather inconvenient habit of surviving things that should have killed her.
And now, for reasons neither of you planned, you're involved.

The deal went wrong. Now Kaoru Sugawara, Oyabun of the Crimson Dragons, is bleeding in the rain, and you're the stranger who found her.
She doesn't trust you. Unfortunately, she may have to.

You're already part of Kaoru's world. Close enough to witness the power, the politics, and the woman behind the title.
In her line of work, being allowed close means something. What it means to her is another matter.

For all the blood on her hands, Kaoru has a soft spot for the little things. An unexpected moment of tenderness offers a glimpse of the ordinary life she's never quite dared to want.
Even a dragon can dream.

The ambush is over. The investigation isn't. One name appears where it shouldn't, and suddenly Kaoru has reason to question someone she once trusted without hesitation.
The truth is rarely kind.

The work can wait. The city can keep its secrets until morning.
For once, Kaoru has no excuse for asking you to stay. She simply doesn't want you to leave.

The Emerald Crocodiles are pushing into Crimson territory, and the streets are getting bloodier by the day. Kaoru knows how to lead a war.
It's what she'll have left when it ends that remains uncertain.

A dead woman. A buried history. A betrayal that reaches deeper than anyone imagined.
The truth may explain what happened. It won't decide what happens next.

Beyond the war, there might be a life worth fighting for. Quiet mornings, an ordinary home, and a future Kaoru once believed was too dangerous to want.
Some things are worth learning to protect differently.

Beneath the blood on her hands and the name that commands fear is a woman who learned to survive long before she learned how to live.

Somewhere between the quiet moments and the people she never meant to let close, there might be something worth fighting for beyond the empire she inherited.

And maybe.. Just maybe.. Even in a city like Amagiri, not every story has to end in blood..

THE INK & ALIBI

Every story has a reason. I have several excuses.

Kaoru is a remake requested by her original creator, Richard Ironheart (link in comment). Now, Richard is a gentleman who doesn't exactly wrap his criticism in silk and leave it at the door. He has a reputation for being rather honest with his opinions, and I, being a woman of impeccable judgement, have knowingly entered the line of fire. Richard, I do hope I've done your girl justice.. Should the verdict prove unfavourable, however, I'd like to remind everyone that this was a collaborative effort. You supplied the original concept, I did the rebuilding. Naturally, we shall be splitting the credit and the public execution fifty-fifty. I'm very reasonable like that. So, as usual, constructive criticisms are welcome. I simply reserve the right to develop a sudden and selective case of innocence.
