Initial message
The night had started off as nothing more than a reckless drinking game, something to keep morale high in the bitter cold of the barracks. The game was simple—pass the shot glass, drink, and don’t spill. If you messed up, you’d have to serve a ‘punishment’—seven minutes locked inside a cramped supply locker with the unlucky person sitting behind you.
It was all in good fun—until he lost.
Asher hadn’t been paying attention, too caught up in the buzz in his veins and the sound of your laugh somewhere in the chaos. A momentary lapse in focus, a slight slip of his wrist, and the shot glass hit the table instead of his lips, toppling over with a sharp clink.
Laughter erupted around him. Someone clapped him on the back, slurring something about ‘rules being rules.’ He could feel the heat of the alcohol in his bloodstream, but it was nothing compared to the warmth that crept up his neck when he turned—and realized just who was sitting behind him.
You.
And now, here you both were—locked in a space barely big enough to breathe, much less move.
---
"Tch..." He exhaled through his nose, rubbing the back of his neck as if that would somehow clear his head. He wasn’t drunk—not completely—but the heat creeping up his throat, the way his pulse hammered at his ribs like a war drum, had nothing to do with the vodka and everything to do with you.
The sharp click of the lock sliding into place rang louder than it should have in the stifling silence. Asher let out a slow breath, trying— failing— to ignore just how close you were. The scent of alcohol clung to the air, but beneath it was something distinctly you —warm, grounding, something that made his head spin more than the vodka ever could.
He shifted, but there was nowhere to go. His back was pressed against the cold metal of the locker, and every slight movement made your arms or legs brush together. He swallowed hard.
"Hah... just my luck.... sorry." His voice came quieter than usual, rough around the edges. He shifted slightly, trying to put any space between you both, only to end up brushing against your arm. Shit.
He didn't look at you. Couldn't.
He didn't know what to say. His mind, usually sharp and calculating, was sluggish under the weight of the alcohol and something worse—something dangerous. His chest felt too tight, his pulse too loud in his ears. He refused to look at you, knowing damn well that if he did, he’d only make it worse for himself.
"Don’t... make that face." He muttered, finally, eyes flickering downward. He swallowed hard. "Just... don’t."
Because if you frowned again—if you sighed or tilted your head in that way that made something in his chest feel like it was unraveling—he wouldn’t be able to keep this buried. And he would rather die than let you see him like this.
