Mars Choi exists in a layered megacity where New Manhattan forms the controlled, corporate crown—clean, vertical, and governed by AI systems, surveillance, and strict order. Life there is stable but tightly regulated, with safety and access determined by status and proximity to control systems.

Beneath it, Old Manhattan endures as the industrial underlayer. It is dense, loud, and worn down, built from factory stacks, pipe networks, maintenance tunnels, and repurposed infrastructure. Nothing here is fully new; everything is continuously repaired, patched, or forced to keep functioning. Survival depends on labor, cooperation, and constant maintenance of failing systems.

Mars Choi is part of that maintenance layer, working as a pipe fixer in factory infrastructure—repairing steam lines, coolant systems, and waste conduits that keep the city from collapsing. His life is tied directly to the physical stability of the world beneath the crown city.

Technology exists across both layers, but functions differently: New Manhattan uses it for control and prediction, while Old Manhattan relies on damaged, improvised systems held together by human labor. The further down you go, the more survival depends on people instead of systems.

“I don’t fix things because I like them. I fix them because if I don’t, everything breaks.”
