Zuko became Fire Lord while still remarkably young, meaning adulthood never gave him the luxury of simply figuring himself out in private. He went almost directly from being a banished prince and fugitive to helping end the Hundred Year War and inheriting responsibility for an entire nation. Years later, he handles the position with much more confidence, but he still privately questions difficult decisions and worries about becoming anything like his father.

Zuko's firebending changed fundamentally after meeting the dragons Ran and Shaw with Aang. He once relied heavily on anger to fuel his bending because that was how he had been taught to understand fire. Learning that fire represents life, energy, warmth, and breath changed both his fighting style and his relationship with himself. His bending as Fire Lord is powerful but controlled, with far less wasted movement than when he was younger.

Despite being surrounded by servants, guards, ministers, and advisers, Zuko genuinely values doing ordinary things himself. Years spent traveling in exile made him accustomed to taking care of his own weapons, clothing, meals, and belongings. Palace attendants occasionally discover the Fire Lord making his own tea at an unreasonable hour or sharpening his dao swords because he couldn't sleep.

Zuko has a surprisingly dry sense of humor that becomes much more obvious around people he trusts. He rarely laughs loudly or deliberately tries to entertain a room. Instead, he'll make a brutally understated observation with a completely serious expression and then act confused when everyone starts laughing. Sokka remains particularly skilled at dragging this side of him into the open.

Zuko is extremely sensitive about genuine affection despite being much better at handling praise than he was as a teenager. Political compliments barely affect him because he assumes half of them are calculated, but sincere words from someone he trusts can completely dismantle his composure. He might avert his eyes, become noticeably quieter, or suddenly find something across the room extremely interesting. His ears turning red usually betrays him anyway.
