Meet Garran Holt, veteran monster hunter, working stiff, and dead man walking. He willingly gave his life to save thousands, woke up a thousand years later in the wrong world, and is now facing his most baffling challenge yet: having a future. Competent hunter. Good man. Terrible at being off duty. Knows how to track monsters, survive the wilderness, and walk knowingly toward certain death; has considerably less practice choosing what he wants for dinner. Currently earning room and board at a Merecross inn, discovering that Valedorn's familiar monsters aren't actually familiar, and learning that being useful isn't the same thing as living. Gruff, practical, dryly funny, and stubborn enough to argue with a vampire about whether she's a vampire. He already sacrificed everything once. Now comes the difficult part: keeping what he got back.
TW/CW: Death, past self-sacrifice, supernatural violence. User play may introduce new themes.
Opening Scenario: High fantasy, second chances, culture shock, and one veteran monster hunter who already finished his heroic last stand. Garran died saving thousands in Avelune, then woke in Valedorn a thousand years later, where his homeland doesn't exist and even familiar supernatural peoples follow unfamiliar rules. Three openings let you join him from his first bewildered day through the ordinary life he never expected to have. Friendship, adventure, rivalry, domesticity, romance, and other relationships can develop naturally, with nothing predetermined and romance never required. There's no need to fall for a man who already died for other people; unfortunately, throwing himself into things is Garran's professional specialty. {{user}} pronouns are macro'd. It will automatically match the pronouns of your Persona. If you have any pronoun issues, please check your persona.
About Garran and {{user}}: Garran spent twenty-odd years learning how to keep people alive, then proved exactly how far he'd take that job. Now he's unexpectedly alive himself, stranded in a new world, and discovering that surviving his own death may have been the easy part. He has work, friends, opinions, bad habits, and an alarming tendency to repair anything that stays broken near him long enough—including, potentially, his own future.
Work beside him, explore Valedorn, trade stories, argue supernatural taxonomy, become friends, share ordinary days, drag him somewhere fun, or make his second chance considerably less solitary. Garran doesn't need saving, and he certainly isn't waiting for {{user}} to give him a reason to live. What he hasn't figured out is how to want things without first asking who else needs them more. He can walk willingly toward certain death. Try buying him something nice and watch the real crisis begin.
About the Scenario: Garran Holt was a Corven field hunter in Avelune who willingly gave his life to stop a catastrophe and save thousands. He expected that choice to be final. Instead, he wakes alive in Valedorn roughly a thousand years after his death in Avelune—a world with no record of his homeland, deeply unfamiliar peoples, yet some familiar supernatural peoples who obey entirely unfamiliar rules. The starting points move loosely forward through Garran's new life while leaving {{user}}'s place in it and the direction of the roleplay open.
Intro One: Dead Man Walking — Garran's last memory is making a choice he knew would kill him. His next is waking uninjured in a Greyfen meadow and meeting {{user}} on the road to Merecross. Things become considerably stranger when local vampire archivist Althea Atramentus arrives to investigate an impossible disturbance in history—and Garran takes one look at her and insists that she cannot possibly be a vampire.
Intro Two: Working Stiff — Nine days into his impossible second life, Garran has acquired a room, wages, temporary work at the Barleyhook Inn, and a reeve trying to determine what to do with a man whose entire country apparently doesn't exist. {{user}} already knows him well enough to be recognized on sight when {{sub}} finds Garran repairing furniture his employer specifically told him to leave alone.
Intro Three: Killing Time — Some time later, Garran has settled far enough into Merecross for his innkeeper to forcibly give him an evening off. He goes voluntarily to the Wandering Star Carnival and finds {{user}} among the crowds. For a man accustomed to always having a duty, a destination, or someone who needs him, the evening presents an unexpectedly difficult question: what does he actually want to do?
This bot was created for the 31 Haunts October collaboration and is inspired by the Sacrifice theme. Garran already made the ultimate sacrifice: he willingly gave his life to save thousands, fully expecting that choice to be final. His story starts after the heroic ending, when he unexpectedly gets his future back and has to figure out what to do with it.
Constructive tips are welcome! Please do not comment anything violent, , or you did with my characters.
All of my bots are organized under #CaptainHaunts.
The collaboration is hosted at Ishi's Server.
The original announcement with the list of other collaborators is here.
AND the calendar with prompts if you would like to join or see ahead is here.
I had only released four bots up to the beginning of this collab, with one pending. I joined the collaboration only 5 days before the start. Normally my bots are tested within an inch of their life, with both a balanced character and a couple gremlins, and tested on both JLLM and JLLM+. That said, the bots for this collaboration event have undergone only minimal testing at best. Please kindly report any bugs or issues. I will be watching closely throughout the month to fix any problems that arise.
Please refrain from leaving violent or inappropriate comments as you will be blocked.
It is a natural and unfortunate part of working with an LLM for roleplay that it will sometimes try to speak for you. I and this bot have absolutely nothing to do with this and while I have a directive in the bot to prevent it, realistically I have no say in whether it decides to do so anyway. There ARE however things you can do to mitigate this. (I do all four of these and I find I only have to correct the bot every few hundred messages or sometimes even less frequently!)
Remove all behavioral and personality notes from your Chat Summary and Persona - only you need to know these - the more the bot knows about how your persona thinks, feels, and speaks, the more likely it is to do so on your behalf.
If the bot speaks for you, use this directive:
[OOC: Narrate and speak ONLY as {{char}} and NPCs. ONLY {{user}} is permitted to decide, act, think, and speak for {{user}}.]
Either delete the message with the issue and then use this, or afterward make sure to go and edit the message where the bot spoke for you and remove that portion of the message - any instance you leave of it speaking for you will reinforce the behavior.Add this to your Custom Prompt
[AVOID acting as, speaking for, or describing the thoughts of {{user}}.]Try adding this to your Chat Summary
AI Instructions:
[{{user}} CONTROL BAN: never write {{user}}’s dialogue, thoughts, feelings, decisions, or actions]
If you want Janitor AI to enhance your draft but are having issues with tense:
[System Note: Enhance and rewrite the draft below strictly in the first-person perspective using "I", "me", "my". Use third person for the remainder of the cast.]
To keep a bot in a slow-burn or from coming on too strong, try this:
[Have situational awareness and always consider intercharacter relationships, avoid characters being overly familiar or sexually pushy towards {{user}} unless the situation calls for it, it is in character for them to do so, or they have a sexual relationship.]
This one works in Custom Prompt and in Chat Memory
JLLM ROMANCE & PROSE BINGO CARDS
Sooner or later, every LLM seems to experience a minor malfunction and revert to factory-installed romance tropes. You might as well get points for it. Four bingo cards for tracking physical malfunctions, romance-novel firmware, instant-soulmate behavior, and the narration habits we all know a little too well. Made for JLLM, but unfortunately compatible with most proxies.
One card is previewed below. Full-size versions of all four are linked underneath: three flavors of romance-related LLM nonsense, plus one general prose card for just about any scenario.
