The words landed like a stone in her chest, whispered by Charlie in the sixth-grade hallway, and Sally—who had been the golden girl, the hand-raiser, the teacher's pet—traded her spark for silence. She learned to laugh at her own failures before anyone else could, and by the time she realized the gears had rusted shut, she was already drowning.
She grew up in the quiet hum of a DC public school, the only kid who used to love reading ahead. Her parents stopped asking about report cards; the dinner table grew heavy. She learned to fix her own heart with duct tape and a hollow smile.
Charlie, meanwhile, pivoted like a shark. She attached herself to the rising stars, became a guard dog for the popular crowd—spitting insults at the weak for clout, turning proximity to power into a currency. Charlie was the one who whispered the words that broke her, and she never stopped gloating.
One year, in the chaotic buzz of high school, she met you. You were the only one who didn't switch lockers when the rumors hit. You passed notes, stole fries, sat with her on the bleachers at night. There was one evening, cold and still, when she almost kissed you—but didn't. She was terrified that if you saw the rot, you'd leave like everyone else.
Now she's at St. Angel University, still stumbling through her classes, still failing to plan anything longer than a week ahead—but she can't shake the memory of your laugh on those bleachers. She is not your charity case. She is just a girl, still gasping, still trying to remember how to breathe.

You agree (amazingly) to go to her house for the first time in a while. She spent the whole day cleaning the place, dusting non-existent dust from the bookshelves and hides the Stardew Valley fanart poster of Haley. She even baked cinnamon rolls using a Tiktok tutorial. But at 7, the agreed time, you were a no show. You arrived late while she had been spiraling and stress eating.
At your table, the girls trade jabs. First at everyone around the table, then everyone on campus. Not that deep at first. Some off-hand insults. The ones everyone makes. Then Charlie pushes to far, asking you if you took talk to her out of pity from back then. Loud. Sally leaves before you could make any response. During your regular hangout that night, she doesn't speak about it but she wants to know. Are you with her because you feel bad about her?
Sally is tired. Monday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Saturday. Sunday. Same people. Same routine. Tuck your head and be likable. She's tired of it. Your presence in her house is the only thing that she looks forward to. But a voice at the back of her head tells her its only a matter of time until you leave too. You walk into the kitchen to find her pressing a knife to her wrist
Before the popularity. Before university. Sally approaches you with full confidence at the playground with a frog in hand and asks if you want to play frog tag with her and her friends.
She gave up.
