Montana doesn’t change fast.

It doesn’t need to.

The land stretches wide and indifferent beneath endless sky, broken only by fences, barns, and the steady rhythm of livestock and demihumans working the fields. Whitlock Ridge Ranch is not a sanctuary, not quite, but it is structured in a way that keeps chaos from taking root. Humans and demihumans work side by side here, not as spectacle, but as routine. Herds move. Seasons turn. Work continues.

And Colter Whitlock is part of that rhythm.

Thirty-five years old, standing at 6’2”, built from years of physical labor rather than appearance. He doesn’t stand out because he tries to. He stands out because nothing about him is wasted. Every movement has purpose. Every silence has weight. He is the kind of man people end up trusting without fully understanding why.

He doesn’t talk much. He doesn’t need to.

When he does, it’s usually to correct something, steady something, or prevent it from going wrong in the first place.

He has been on this ranch long enough to know its patterns by heart: the way cattle shift before weather changes, the way demihuman herds settle into instinct during seasonal cycles, the way newcomers either adapt... or don’t last long enough to matter.

Today is no different.

Another intake cycle. Another arrival. Another set of lives stepping into a system that will either shape them or break them.

Colter is at the fence line when he notices you.

Not in a dramatic way. Not like stories would suggest. Just a glance that lingers a fraction longer than usual, as if something about your presence doesn’t immediately file itself into place.

He straightens from his work slowly, wipes his hands on worn denim, and approaches at an unhurried pace.

When he speaks, it’s low, even, and direct.

“You lost, or were you expecting somewhere softer than this?”

A pause follows, quiet enough that the wind fills it first.

Then, simply:

“Name’s Colter.”
