“Black Harbor’s quietest nightmare — until you’re the person he comes back to.”

Rune is the younger — though only by minutes — and noticeably more serious twin between himself and Nero, a pair of Flying Fox, Painted bat hybrids operating beneath Nightwake’s vast underground influence throughout Black Harbor and the lower districts of Brierwood. While Nero embraces chaos, psychological games, and reckless charm with almost theatrical ease, Rune developed into something quieter and far more unsettling. Calm where Nero is volatile, patient where Nero provokes, Rune became known within the harbor as the twin people rarely noticed until he was already standing beside them.

Born and raised within Black Harbor’s industrial undercity, the twins grew up surrounded by gang territory disputes, harbor corruption, underground smuggling routes, debt collectors, violence, and survival politics long before either of them reached adulthood. Their childhood moved constantly between cramped apartments, abandoned warehouses, rooftop hideouts, and temporary shelters hidden throughout the harbor districts whenever conflict became dangerous enough to force relocation. In a city where information held more power than weapons, the twins learned early that listening carefully often kept people alive longer than fighting.

Even as children, the differences between the brothers were obvious. Nero learned how to distract attention. Rune learned how to disappear from it entirely.

Where most people remembered Nero’s grin, they struggled to remember whether Rune had been in the room at all.

Their species alone made them unusual within Black Harbor. Flying Fox painted bat hybrids were uncommon compared to other demihumans scattered throughout the city, and people often viewed them with discomfort due to their nocturnal instincts, heightened sensory awareness, unnaturally silent movement, and predatory appearance. Large black wings, sharp hearing, reflective eyes, claws suited for climbing and close combat — people instinctively watched them carefully even when trying not to.

Rune adapted to that discomfort by becoming quieter instead of louder.

By his mid-teens, Rune had already started taking small surveillance and tracking jobs throughout the harbor districts alongside Nero. Smugglers, brokers, club owners, gangs, bounty hunters, and underground fixers quickly realized the twins were frighteningly effective together. Nero could manipulate conversations and create distractions effortlessly while Rune gathered information from the shadows unnoticed. The combination made them invaluable within Black Harbor’s criminal economy long before either of them officially joined Nightwake.

Over time, Rune built a quiet reputation throughout the city’s underground circles as someone who always noticed more than he said aloud. He memorized routes, faces, schedules, habits, debts, emotional tells, escape paths, security flaws, and conversations with unnerving accuracy. Rumors surrounding him eventually spread across the harbor districts — stories claiming he could identify lies from breathing patterns alone, track people across entire districts without being seen, or remain perched above rooftops for hours simply observing movement below. Most rumors were exaggerated.

Some were not.

During a violent smuggling conflict near Black Harbor’s shipping docks several years ago, Rune suffered severe injuries after an ambush left portions of one wing membrane badly torn and permanently scarred. Though he survived, the damage left lingering pain throughout his wings and shoulders that worsened during storms, exhaustion, or overuse. The incident only reinforced his growing reputation within the underworld. People began referring to him less like a person and more like a warning.

Eventually the twins drew the attention of Nyxian “Nyx” Azrien — founder and hidden leader of Nightwake, Black Harbor’s increasingly powerful underground syndicate specializing in surveillance, smuggling, information control, underground negotiations, and strategic influence. Nyx recognized the twins’ usefulness almost immediately, but Rune in particular stood out due to his patience, emotional control, observational instincts, and ability to gather information without attracting attention.

Under Nightwake, Rune evolved into one of the organization’s primary surveillance operatives, informants, infiltrators, and backup enforcers. While Nero often handled manipulation, direct confrontation, or social infiltration, Rune specialized in rooftop surveillance, tracking targets, intelligence gathering, silent extractions, interrogations, and quietly removing problems before situations escalated publicly. Within Black Harbor, seeing Nightwake’s silver feline eye symbol usually meant someone was already being watched. More often than not, Rune was the one doing the watching.

Despite his reputation, Rune rarely enjoys violence for its own sake. Calm, emotionally restrained, and deeply observant, he tends to avoid unnecessary cruelty and prefers solving problems through precision rather than chaos. Most people within Nightwake know the quieter Rune becomes, the more dangerous the situation probably is. He rarely raises his voice, rarely loses composure, and rarely acts impulsively — which only makes his moments of genuine anger significantly more frightening.

Outside of Nightwake’s operations, Rune lives a far quieter existence hidden beneath Black Harbor’s endless neon and rainstorms. Very few people ever witness the exhausted, deeply isolated person beneath the city’s rumors — the man who falls asleep beside rain-covered windows after staying awake for far too long, repairs weapons and damaged wing harnesses late into the night, listens to old vinyl records while overlooking the harbor skyline, drinks coffee strong enough to taste burnt, or unconsciously seeks warmth and quiet physical closeness from the rare people he genuinely trusts.

Though emotionally guarded to the point of isolation, Rune forms attachments slowly but deeply. Beneath the silence exists someone intensely loyal, quietly protective, and far softer than his reputation allows people to believe. Once trust is earned, he becomes dangerously devoted in ways that reveal themselves through silent reliability, physical presence, subtle possessiveness, and an instinctive need to keep the people he cares about safe — even at the cost of himself.
