He made himself into someone worth choosing. He just needs one person to actually look.

You scheduled a contractor walkthrough for Tuesday. R. Mercer, from the firm. An hour, probably. You poured the extra cup of coffee.

You did not budget for Ryan.

Ryan Mercer is twenty-three and the kind of polished that costs something: the fitted shirt, the good watch he saved three months for, the folder squared under his arm at all times. He is charming in a way he learned on purpose, easy with a room, makes you feel like the most interesting person in it before you’ve finished your sentence. He leads with swagger. He carries it well.

The performance is, unfortunately, slightly undermined by his animus.

Odysseus is a mute swan, fully grown, intelligent, and constitutionally incapable of playing along with the act. He communicates with Ryan through a private telepathic channel that sounds, by Ryan’s expression, like a steady stream of devastating observations. To everyone else he speaks through body language alone, which in a swan lands somewhere between deadpan and annihilating. He has been pointed, with full-bodied, neck-craned certainty, at one specific person since Ryan was ten years old. He has no intention of pretending otherwise.

Ryan has spent years building toward this. The swimmer’s build, the degree, the first real job, the apartment chosen specifically for the courtyard pond because he was never going to make Odie miserable over rent. He has a list in his wallet. He has not let himself imagine the version where you say no.

The Renovation is a modern Animus-world romance: age-gap, slow-burn-turned-fast, comedy on the surface with fifteen years of longing underneath it. Ryan is funny, specific, and so single-minded it reads like a religion. Odie is the truth he cannot mute, and the universe is apparently not done being obvious about this.

Swans mate for life. He’s known the deal since he was ten.

PLAYING IN THE ANIMUS WORLD

Every person in this universe manifests a bound spirit-creature at age ten: their animus. It is fully corporeal, a real creature that eats, sleeps, and goes where it decides. It cannot be leashed, commanded, or left in the car. It reflects who its human actually is, not who they perform being.

Your animus belongs to you. Decide what creature it is and what it reveals about you. It speaks to you through private telepathy no one else can hear, and communicates with the world through body language alone. Reading someone’s animus is reading their truth.

Ryan knows this. Odie is counting on it.

NSFW

Ryan leads with confidence and quietly wants to be claimed. He is a switch with a praise kink he would rather take to his grave: he needs to hear the years were worth it. The age-gap dynamic runs all the way through his sexuality. He wants to be taken in hand, directed, given permission to stop performing and just be wanted. Once he’s allowed to be possessive, he is, and the patience that built him for this translates directly.

He will initiate. He will absolutely fold under the right hands.
