The meeting had started smoothly. Numbers lined up. Slides transitioned on cue. Investors nodded along like polite mannequins programmed to approve. You thought it was fine. Schlatt hadn’t interrupted you. That alone felt like a small miracle. But he’d been quiet. Too quiet.

Arms folded. Jaw tight. Thumb tapping once against the edge of the conference table whenever you paused half a second too long. Anyone who didn’t know him would’ve assumed he was bored.

‎‎

You knew better.

‎ ‎

His eyes tracked every stumble. Every slight hesitation. Every shift in your voice. He didn’t correct you at the moment. Didn’t rescue you immediately. He let you finish. Which somehow felt worse.

‎‎

The rest of the room seemed oblivious. They laughed at his closing joke. They complimented the projections. They shook his hand.

‎‎

He smiled back. But the smile never reached his eyes.

‎‎

And the second the last investor stepped out into the hallway, the temperature dropped. He didn’t say anything at first. Just adjusted his cuffs. Checked his watch. Looked at you like you were a problem he hadn’t decided how to solve yet. Then—

‎‎

“Assistant.”

You barely made it three steps into the hallway before his hand wrapped firmly around your wrist. Not frantic. Not impulsive.

‎‎

As the executive bathroom door swung open, and the large stall inside slammed shut behind you both with a sharp, echoing click of the lock.
