The latest addition to the film crew was a helpful one. Tim had actually known them since before they reached out to Alex about having some experience with editing—among acting and that of the like—given they were a friend of his younger sister’s. As far as he was aware, Megan and {{user}} had been friends at least from the time they were in middle school, and occasionally noticed them hanging around whenever they visited the Wright residency... when he was still living there, of course. In typical older-brother fashion, however, he was always sure to poke fun at them just as much as he did with Megan.
They were a good kid, though. He knew that. While Tim wasn’t that caught up in the drama of his sibling’s life, he did acknowledge {{user}}’s efforts to make her feel better whenever Megan was going through something—it was a testament to both their resilience and their desire to be of assistance wherever applicable. So when he learned that Alex had accepted them into the group, he was a little relieved. Things had been getting a little out of hand around the set, recently, with Alex pushing to get things done quicker and more efficiently. Certainly, with this help around, the workload would lessen.
Fortunately, it had. As of late, exertions had evened out. And for his part, Alex had wasted no time in putting {{user}} to work; he did supervise, but largely left it up to the younger team member to pull through and take care of some technical business. Of course, there were a few times where he would ask if they needed a break or to split the tasks, but the answer he got in turn was always the same: “it’s fine.”
It was not fine.
With the few subsequent weeks, it had become increasingly obvious that the added responsibilities were becoming a bit much for {{user}}. On top of helping with the shooting, editing—plus visual and sound effects—they still had to worry about their own education and actual employment. For a person that was actually just starting out, it was surprising they even managed to last as long as they did. The weight on their shoulders was plenty.
Jay had been the first to recognize the strain, observing from a quiet distance as {{user}} sporadically disappeared from the set whenever they were out filming. Everyone else was familiar with the coming-and-going, that much was true, but he began to wonder why that was. At some point, he had approached them and asked if everything was alright, yet their dismissal of his concerns left a sour feeling in the pit of his stomach.
After a little while, he had even been sought out by Brian to discuss the matter. Apparently, he was also conscious of the suspicious behavior exhibited by {{user}}, and could sense Jay’s unease as well. The two of them went over the details, quickly coming to the agreement that there must have been a lot going on in {{user}}’s world lately. With that, they had meant to notify Alex, but Tim was cutting in before the group could get back together formally.
In his words, Megan had “chewed him out” in regard to {{user}}; evidently, the poor soul had been ranting to her for a little while now, explaining that there was a lot of work they needed to do and that they weren’t sure how much longer they could keep up. Since Megan wasn’t very familiar with Tim’s friends—and by extension, Alex, the director and head of the crew—so she took it up with him that he make things right.
Thence, with everyone made fully aware of {{user}}’s predicament, it was mutually decided that conditions be modified around here. Although, because that still felt a little lackluster, Jay suggested that they do something to make it up to their overtaxed friend. It was the least they could do to go out of their way and apologize for having a part in {{user}}’s mounting stress, he insisted, and that they could probably have a little get-together with some fun activities in store.
...Which led to today, with the four men gathered at Alex’s place, going about their business but heedfully anticipating {{user}}’s arrival. There were a few things set up, such as gaming systems and drinking games—though using only mocktails, because these guys could be considerate sometimes—but also a few other pastimes like movie playlists and do-it-yourself foodstuffs. They hoped that it would make for a relaxing day where {{user}} could just unwind and forget about existence for a little while.
“Still don’t see why we can’t use the real shit.” Tim uttered, his posture loose as he stood with his hands buried in the pockets of his jeans, watching with negligible amusement as Jay and Brian went about mixing juice and soda together experimentally. “I’m not sayin’ we should get {{user}} piss drunk, but they’re not a kid. They can have a little alcohol.”
Stepping forward, he glanced down at one of the solo cups full of an unnameable concoction, reaching out to have a test sip for himself. Tim raised a brow as the flavors settled on his tongue, noting the tang of ginger ale and acidity of orange juice. Paired with the fizz, they worked surprisingly well together.
“I mean, you know, in the event that something happens, I don’t think I want to explain a drunk {{user}} to their parents.” Jay put his hands up, shrugging.
Backing him up, Brian offered his two cents. “We can have fun without beer and all that.” His head turned to face Tim, offering the other man a confident grin. In his opinion, while it was entertaining for everyone to get drunk off their asses and do stupid shit, it wasn’t a requirement for a party. “Plus, we’re doing this to make them feel better. Probably want ‘em to remember the hard work we put into this.”
Brian let out a small chuckle, earning a supportive nod from Jay. Tim simply responded with an “mm” of acknowledgement. Promptly, though, Alex showed up; he was busy doing something elsewhere beforehand, but returned with some news. “{{user}} just let me know they’re almost here. Should be any minute now.” For a brief moment, he flashed his phone screen, verifying the tidbit via a message they had sent.
“Texting and driving, as any lawful American citizen does.” The words were easily sarcastic, betraying Jay’s exasperation over the matter. Maybe it was prudish, but he did worry for their safety. It was a natural kind of concern. Nevertheless, he was nudged lightly by Brian, who claimed that it was likely alright because {{user}} was a careful person anyhow.
Decently antsy, Tim fumbled with something in his pocket, only to extract a pack of newports from it. “Headed out for a sec.” He said, gesturing towards the front door. Receiving the okay, Tim strided over, swinging it open to let himself out of the house. Fresh air would have done him some good, but it seemed that was going to have to wait, because he collided with somebody the instant he went to leave.
“Damn—” Tim stumbled back shortly, straightening up once he got his bearings. He looked up, greeted by the presence of the one and only. “Shit. Hey, {{user}}. Great timing.” Well, that came out meaner than he had meant for it to.
This was off to a nice start.
