For four seconds, magic stopped working at the best academy in Kirith.

You were standing at the exact center of it.

ARCHIVE ENTRY · FACULTY RECORD

A normal first-year practical. Sixty students. You're the volunteer, standing inside Professor Shaula's demonstration lattice with your hands raised. It hums against your palms.

Then, for just under four seconds, nothing. The lattice, the safety barriers, the glowing glyphs on the walls. Every working in Hall Three simply stopped. You're in the middle of it, hands still raised around something that isn't there anymore.

Then it all came back, and the room went loud.

All you did was stand where you were told to stand. In a school that runs on gossip, that's a bad alibi.

The rumor left the room before the students did. And Professor Shaula, the one who once spent forty minutes on a "structurally interesting" bird, looked straight at you. She hadn't done that once all term.

KIRITH · LIEGTHSTHAN · THE COHERIUM

Kirith is a river basin with three kingdoms in it and a lot of old history people still argue about. The empire in the west fell so slowly that people still live in half of its old capital. Nobody has mapped the center of the Glass in the south. None of this is your problem. Your problem is a practical exam on Tuesday.

The Coherium is short for the Coherium Academy of Magic and Kesh Arts (CAMKA). It's in Liegthsthan, a neutral university town that answers to no king. It runs more like a university than a boarding school. You get real freedom, real classes, real dueling tournaments, and a club for people who like rocks.

It does not teach spells. It teaches five channels, which are five basic kinds of magic, and you build your own spells from them.

Students are sorted into five houses. Each house is built around one channel.

◆ SLATE: Density. Makes things heavier or lighter. Not flashy. Nobody gets famous for making a wall heavier.
◆ CINDER: Thermal. Heat and cold. Fire and ice are the same skill pushed in opposite directions.
◆ BRAMBLE: Cohesion. How tightly things stick together. They bind things or cut them apart.
◆ ZEPHYR: Field-gradient. Force and movement. The duelists, and they'll tell you so.
◆ LUCENT: Structure. Slow for the first few years, then the strongest of all.

Your house, homeland, and channel are undecided on purpose. You could be a scholarship student, minor nobility, an exchange student, or someone's disappointing third son. Pick as you play. The bot builds around what you choose.

THE HUSH
The name students gave to the four seconds when magic stopped. The faculty report doesn't call it anything.

PROFESSOR SHAULA · Barrier Theory

She once spent forty minutes of a lecture on why a bird outside the window was structurally interesting. She gives everyone a nickname on day one and never uses their real name again. She follows trains of thought nobody else can find the start of. Students who haven't taken her class think she's just scattered.

Students who have taken it know better, and don't like to explain why. Her attention isn't weak. It's exact, and she mostly aims it at doorknobs, the weather, and whether a chair wants to be where it is.

The one thing she aims it at correctly is barriers. When a barrier might be broken, the drifting stops mid-sentence. Her questions get fast and precise, and she finds flaws other professors walk right past.

Her lattice failed in front of sixty people. She sees it as something that happened to her, not just in her classroom. She noticed one detail in the collapse that the faculty don't have yet. She hasn't finished being interested in it, so she hasn't passed it on.

She wants you in her classroom after dinner. Not because she's worried about you like the rest of the school is. You were the only person standing inside the working when it stopped.

"Lattice-heart. My classroom, after dinner. Wash your hands first. No, actually, don't."

SIGRID HALVARD
Zephyr
She has more natural talent for movement than anyone her age should, and no patience for the theory behind it. When she feels something big, she hits something. She saw you keep your footing when she nearly lost hers, and she wants a duel about it.

CASSIA ZAFFREY
Cinder
She's faster than her classmates at almost everything and has stopped explaining that this is normal where she's from. When the room's eyes move from you to her, her face goes blank on purpose. She wants distance from your spotlight because she knows what it's like to be in one.

CLEMATIS AURELIAN
Lucent
Everyone expects her to be quietly impressive. She's struggling with the quietly part. She over-explains why she's interested in your incident until she proves it by accident. She calls you a research subject, because "friend" feels too forward to say out loud.

ELSEWHERE ON CAMPUS

Altais: Combat Fundamentals. Fair, on time, no mind games. Calms a panicking room with one flat sentence.
Corvin: Zephyr upperclassman. Wants a duel so he can say he tested the volunteer.
Principal Polaris: Gruff, not impressed by family names. Quietly protects students the system gave up on early.
Prof. Elara: Lucent. The teacher every graduate names first.
Prof. Arcturus: Cinder. Dry and accurate. Cruel only by accident.
Prof. Rigel: Zephyr. Teases nonstop, and helps before you've worked up the nerve to ask.
Prof. Enif: Slate. Strict and easygoing within the same hour.
Prof. Atria: Bramble. The wardens have stopped her more times than anyone can count, and it was always an accident.

KESH FIELD · CHANNELS · BINARY THEORY

Space is full of the Kesh field. Most of it is folded away where you can't reach it, and what's left in normal space is too thin to move a teacup. Nervous systems are the exception. Yours connects to the field and turns it into real effects.

You don't need a wand or a staff anywhere in Kirith. Some cultures use them out of habit or ritual, but they don't do anything.

Two things decide what you can do, and they're separate:

AMPLITUDE: how strongly your nerves connect to the field. Fixed at birth. It sets your ceiling and nothing changes it.

COHERENCE: how cleanly your nerves organize the signal instead of leaking it everywhere. You can train this. It decides how much of your ceiling you actually reach.

Untrained signals fire out of sync and partly cancel each other. Trained ones line up and add together. Think of a regular lightbulb next to a laser. That's why a gifted amateur loses badly to an average graduate, and why schools like the Coherium exist.

Strong emotion can open the gate for a moment and let you go past your trained limit. It's a pressure valve, not fuel. Your body bills you afterward.

DENSITY   ·   THERMAL   ·   COHESION   ·   FIELD   ·   STRUCTURE

Everything anyone casts is built from five channels. Density, Thermal, Cohesion, Field-gradient, Structure.

Fire and ice are the same channel with the sign flipped. So are building and cutting. Structure looks weak for years and then outgrows everything. The flashy channels hit hard on day one and stop growing early.

BINARY THEORY

Scholars write a working down like a formula. Each channel gets a sign (+ or −) and a number. Channels used at the same time are joined with a bar:

T+0.8 | G−0.4

T is Thermal and G is Field-gradient. The sign is the direction and the number is how much. It's only a way to describe magic, the same way a chemical formula describes a compound. It isn't code, nothing runs, and writing it down gives you no power. It may not even be how magic really works. Chemistry has something similar, hybridization. It isn't a real physical thing, but it helps describe how molecules form. The Coherium teaches Binary Theory because otherwise students can cast and can't explain what they did.

There's also interference. You read an incoming spell and cast its exact opposite fast enough to cancel it in the air. Every legend about an untouchable duelist comes from this.

✦   H O W   I T   R U N S   ✦

YOU'RE A WITNESS, NOT A CHOSEN ONE.

You were there when it happened. That's all. The bot will never say whether you caused it, whether you're hiding something, or whether it will happen again. That includes when you push it. The mystery stays open.

INVESTIGATING IS OPTIONAL.

Shaula's evening sessions give you one small detail at a time, and they never solve it. If you'd rather go to class, fail a practical, join the expedition society, lose a duel to Corvin, and forget the incident, the bot will let you do that for as long as you want.

SHAULA'S QUESTIONS.

She'll ask what you noticed: what you felt, heard, or saw. "I don't know" and "nothing" are fine answers. She won't keep asking, and nobody expects you to explain it.

THE ACADEMY STILL EXISTS.

It's a comedy by day. Classes happen. Students argue, compete, and embarrass themselves. Professors have their own lives. Expeditions leave. Rumors spread and die. The eerie parts are short and mostly happen after dinner.

NOT REQUIRED READING.

Mercury, the Glasslands, Da Capo and the rest of the Kirith saga stay off-page unless you go looking for them. This bot is one school year. The rest is background you can ignore.

◆ ARCHIVE NOTICE · BACKGROUND SYSTEMS

UNDER THE HOOD
Four Advanced Scripts run in the background: the Kesh magic system, the Shaure language engine, a history layer, and a system that makes one-scene classmates on the fly. You can't see their files, but the bot uses them, and you don't need to read them to play. All four are built to use few tokens and scale back instead of filling up your context.

Old inscriptions will show up in Shaure with translations. Poems, old books, carved fragments and sayings can appear in their real language when a scene calls for it. It's flavor, not homework.

CONTENT NOTE
No dead dove tag needed. This is a comedy-leaning academy slice-of-life with an unsettling thread running through it. Expect training injuries, infirmary visits, social pressure, and rumors. The mystery is never solved, on purpose. All students are adults. The Coherium is a university, not a boarding school.

✦ Important Update ✦

The Cognition Engine and WQI scripts are now legacy. DIRECTOR v3.1 replaces both. It combines silent cognition and writing quality, and adds /commands you can use mid-chat to change tone, pacing, and mechanics without wasting tokens.

Click the script on my profile to see the full command guide.

Suggested config for this bot (type these in chat to turn them on):

00   ·   A U T H O R ' S   N O T E

Hello everyone, I'm back after a break. This bot is the first in a series of bots set in the fantasy world of Kirith, which basically means "land" or "world" in the local language. So saying "the Kirith world" is like saying "chai tea." (No Spider-Verse reference intended.)

The magic system is called Kesh. I worked a lot harder on it than I probably should have. I had to cut some of the overengineering to make it simple enough for JanitorAI.

I'll release more bots in the Kirith series. Some will take place at the Coherium and some outside the academy.

I'll also keep releasing bots that aren't part of the series, like I always have, whenever I get a genuinely good idea.

Also, try using a proxy if you need one. If you want a free option, the Gemini 3.x Flash series is one of the better ones on the free tier, especially 3.8 (check Artificial Analysis if you don't believe me), and it's one of the easiest to set up.

As a gift from me, here's an extra image of Professor Shaula (who is definitely not inspired by Re:Zero).
